He is not a guy who, if sent to start in AHL instead of NHL, will pout like Bernier. Dude will go down there and tear it up while becoming their leader, that is the kind of guy he is.

Can't wait until he proves his worth and shows why he was picked 4th overall, because be it this year or next it is going to happen!

Interesting.. Eric Stephens writes (or used to write) quite a few Kings and NHL stories for the LA Times. Guess he's found a new gig.

Spot on. I think our doubts will be erased about Hickey this year, whether it's in the AHL or the NHL. He is developing at a nice, steady place. Lombardi has done a nice job bringing future leaders into the system.

I have a feeling that he's going to make the team this year.

Someone posted a clip awhile back of Hickey fighting...that totally changed my perception of him...

Doughty, Johnson, Scuderi, Greene and OD are the top 5 for sure.

Hickey will be battling Drewiske and Voinov for the #6 spot. I see Harrold as the #7.

I cannot possibly see how or why we would even think about having him on the team this year. To me, it just doesn't make sense to rush him when we have a more than capable D now as it is... bringing him in would lower the quality of our defence and perhaps hurt him in the long run. All parties would benefit if Hickey spent one year in the A before bringing him up with the big boys.

If that's the case the Kings better do something about that #6 spot...Harrold or Drewiske ain't gonna cut it...Maybe Bagnall or Piskula can step up as a #7 guy.

Drewiskie could probably cut it as a #6.

We need another offensive minded defenseman. If Hickey isn't ready, DL should offer either Zubov or Mathieu Schneider a 1 year deal.

Nothing to lose really. Although I'm not sure Zubov would be willing to play here.

Here were the most common pairings from last season (excluding guys no longer on the team):

Code:
3287	EV	8 DOUGHTY,DREW - 6 O'DONNELL,SEAN
1201	EV	2 GREENE,MATT - 6 O'DONNELL,SEAN
895	EV	2 GREENE,MATT - 3 JOHNSON,JACK
571	EV	3 JOHNSON,JACK - 6 O'DONNELL,SEAN
437	EV	8 DOUGHTY,DREW - 3 JOHNSON,JACK
362	EV	8 DOUGHTY,DREW - 44 DREWISKE,DAVIS
179	EV	44 DREWISKE,DAVIS - 2 GREENE,MATT
For some reason Greene seldom played with Doughty. Not sure why. Given that O'Donnell needs to be a bottom pairing guy, I think if/when Drewiske makes the team, he'll be paired with Doughty. My guess at the opening night pairings:

Doughty-Drewiske
Johnson-Scuderi
Greene-O'Donnell

The real question is this though.......Will those "skills" pay the bills?

Come on man, Drewiske in the #1 pairing, no way. I think Drewski makes the team, but in the bottom pairing:

Doughty - Greene
Johnson - Scuderi
Drewiske - O'Donnell

I think Hickey is best served with a year in the minors, he has all the tools so just let him develop them to a higher level in the minors. I remember being so pissed off at the selection I went on a 20-30 minute rant because I was so fixated on Alzner at #4...shows how much I know

Now if Hickey comes in and blows people away and makes the team, then I see these pairings:

Doughty - Johnson
Hickey - Scuderi
Greene - O'Donnell

Personally, I think this is a year away...Doughty and Johnson are not ready to handle the #1 pairing at this time, it doesn't serve a purpose to have Hickey in the NHL in a 3rd pairing role so he would need the minutes of a 2nd pairing Dman to get acclimated to the NHL. Greene and O'Donnell come in as the shutdown D pairing.

I think Doughty and/or Johnson did just fine when they where in the 1st pairing. As for Hickey....playing 3rd pairing minutes in the NHL is far more beneficial to an NHL ready player than getting 1st pairing minutes in the AHL.

They're both right shots, and Murray likes to mix his pairs.

What? 3rd pairing defensemen play 12-15 minutes a game. That's ideal for acclimating. The third pairing is exactly where Hickey, and all the rest of our rookie defensemen, should start.

That's also what I would do, but I was just pointing out what Murray seemed to go with last season.

That makes too much sense to be true.

I see the bottom two pairs playing around the same minutes. Johnson still gets his PP time. I just think he will benefit the most from playing with O'Donnell. If I'm not mistaken, he and Greene made a horrible pairing last year.

I honestly think Voinov will impress at training camp, He may not make the team out of camp but he could definitely be the first D call up if he continues to play well and improve.
