Kings are On the Rise

Nhl.com had an article on the top 10 teams in the NHL on the rise. Kings are finally being recognized.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=4...id=DL|NHL|Home

5. Los Angeles Kings -- The trade earlier this month for Ryan Smyth indicates management now feels this team is ready to take the next step. With Smyth and fellow newcomer Rob Scuderi joining Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Alexander Frolov, Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson, the Kings should be in a fight for a playoff berth.

I look at the fine young core DL has assembled here, but Chicago, St. Louis, and Columbus really are ahead of us in their rebuilds.

Columbus took years as an expansion team to make the playoffs. CHI and STL spent more money on FA and were more of a hybrid rebuild.

All 3 had at least a 2 year head start assuming you subscribe to the belief that the real re-build actually started after the 05/06 debacle.

Chicago started their rebuild much sooner than the Kings.

Columbus is still trying to build from the time they were founded. They've had a head start on DL as well.

St. Louis is on a similar time frame but not sure that they are that far ahead of the Kings. Some top talent but the Kings have more depth in terms of the future. Especially in net the Kings look to be in a better spot moving forward.

Chicago is so ****ed with the cap. They are a degree of ****ed I have not seen in a while.

St. Louis has Andy Murray as their coach. Best of luck there.

Columbus is in good shape. I wonder how bad they would be without Nash though. We really don't have any player we can say that about. Man, if the Kings didn't have X, they would suck beyond recognition...maybe it's because nobody was good enough to be that important

Meh I'd say Kopitar fits that criteria. He isn't the offensive dynamo that Nash is just yet, but when you consider that Stoll would be our #1 center without Kopitar, he becomes that much more important.

What's wrong with Andy Murray? The coaching staff back then knew how to develop offence while the team was riddled with injuries. Nominated again last year for Coach of the Year. I'd take that Murray over this Murray(Terry) any day

He's a good coach. But when he coached the Kings, they were injured a whole lot in most of his time here. Now, he goes to the Blues, and that team has been injured a ton at least one season (we'll see how long the trend continues). Coincidence? Does he work his players too hard? Does he not place enough emphasis on proper stretching or conditioning (not that it's really his job, but maybe he has some influence, not sure). Who knows. Is it just a curse? Maybe.

I personally think the Blues are one of those crap shoot teams. I don't think they're nearly as good as their second half run last season, but I don't think they're so bad to horribly miss the playoffs. They'll probably land somewhere between 7 and 10 in the conference standings, IMO.

The Sharks currently have about $217,000 of cap space left for next season but still need to add about 4 more forwards to fill out their roster. That's pretty ****ed.

Columbus is the only team I would consider to be ahead of us. Chicago has sucked for a lot longer than us, collected the draft picks, and splurged in free agency. This will undoubtedly cause them problems as soon as next season, cap wise.

St. Louis has a lot of great depth, and Erik Johnson, knee injury considered, is still the most promising young defenseman around (sorry Doughty fans, he's 2nd). But St. Louis doesn't have anyone up front as good as Kopitar. Not even close. An outside of Johnson, we're much deeper on the blueline, and as already mentioned, much further ahead in net.

Columbus, from top to bottom, is flat out ahead of us. But like people already mentioned, they've been rebuilding, er, building since the franchise began. They've been collecting top ten draft picks for quite a while and it's finally starting to pay off.

Chicago wouldn't be this far ahead if it wasn't for getting lucky in the 2007 lottery and jumping 4 spots to go from 5th pick to 1st pick and getting Kane 1st overall. they flat out got lucky, and built around Toews and Kane from then on.

If it wasn't for Mason's amazing season in net, Columbus would have been 12th in the west. It pays off, but I still think our prospect pool and young core is more promising. What if Mason was just a 1 year wonder. That would set them back a few years.
