Canucks sign Kellan Tochkin
Posted on July 21, 2009 by Paul Korczyk

According to a source, the Canucks have signed Everett Silvertips player Kellan Tochkin.

He was one of the Canucks’ prospect camp invitees, and apparently impressed the coaching/scouting staff enough to get a contract.

Here’s what I wrote about him in the prospect camp preview.

Kellan Tochkin from Abbotsford, BC was one of the Everett Silvertips’ better players for the 2008/09 season, scoring 74 points in 72 games. He’s also a bit of a smaller player, at only 5′10″. Also interesting to note is that between the draft and this prospect camp, he’s the only WHL player that was on the Canucks’ radar.

I guess the management are taking baby steps (literally, i.e. all 5'10 of Tochkin) towards "improving [their] coverage of the Western hockey leagues."

IIRC, Gillis was asked about this on the Pipeline show, courtesy of HFCanucks .

He's slow and he's small.

The point totals are certainly at his age (it's impressive to lead your team in scoring in youpromising r draft year) but he'll definitely be a project to even become a quality player in the AHL. Obviously the Canucks feel they can work with prospects on their skating and they probably saw him a lot since he played in Everett with Ellington.

ISS capsule comment from November 2008:
Kellan Tochkin - Everett

Position: RW Height: 5.09 Weight: 176

Creative little right wing has been handling the rough going in the WHL better than we expected and is a productive offensive force every night. Has soft, quick hands and is very dangerous around the net. Tremendous hockey sense and offensive awareness. Sparkplug is a fierce competitor who never stops moving his feet and plays bigger than his size.

The Tochkin contract doesn't count against the 50 contract limit unless he plays pro (which he won't this season). Currently the Canucks have 36 players (excluding Tochkin) under contract plus 3 more players (Hansen, McIver and Wellwood) as RFAs.

Don't think that is really an issue.

But anyways, this is a free prospect, we'll take him.

Probably, but if he turns into a good AHL player like Locke who can see a cup of coffee here or there this is still a good signing.

Basically a free 7th-round pick. I'm sure he'll spend much of the next couple summers with Gagner working on his skating/strength, and hopefully he grows an inch or two. Should be a dominant WHL player over the next couple years.

Amongst 1991-born players in the WHL last year, he was the 3rd-highest scoring behind only Schenn and Kane, who were both top-5 picks in the '09 draft. And he did it for a very low-scoring team. Certainly there's some talent there to work with.

Would be interesting if Schoeder jumped to the WHL (I don't think he will, for the record) because they'd almost certainly be playing on the same line for Everett next year.

Saying he is like Locke is a compliment.

Given the Rangers center situation, Locke is in with a decent chance to play a fair bit in the NHL next year.

Both of these players have the same thing - good hands and great vision.

However, both have the same problems. - small and not great skaters.

Hopefully Tochkin gets good enough to become, at least, good trade bait. If you can turn an undrafted player into a decent draft choice or a roster player, you've done well.

locker room cancer?

I'm an Everett STH and I've never heard anything but positives about Tochkin. From what I gather he is well-liked by the players. Is there a basis for this claim or just conjecture?

I think that response was moreso sarcastic and referential to the same comments about Schroeder falling. I don't believe there was any basis for them with regard to Tochkin.

Silver Tip Hare

It's like a puck bunny, but team-specific.

No, but the Canucks have been terrible this summer for confirming minor stuff.

The Tanner Glass signing was completed 3 weeks ago and known/discussed here but only 'officially' announced yesterday. Funk had been signed for 2 weeks and same thing.

Prior to that, we were one of the only teams that didn't put out a press release re: who we'd given QOs to, and we were all left scrambling to try figuring that out.

There's enough smoke here re: Tochkin that it seems like a done deal.

I believe it; Matt Pope's signing was reported in a local BC paper well before it was officially announced. And as someone else said, Funk and Glass were only officially announced the other day when they've actually been signed for weeks.

Basically a freebie 7th rounder at this point; seems to have some skill, just undersized. Should be interesting to see how he does in Everett next season. They're not the team they used to be, but still have some potential for next season don't they?
