Easily... isn't he our #1 prospect anyways?

I think both Aliu and Beach are much better prospects than Skille, but I still think Skille will see ice time before the other two. It's the last year before he's a RFA. They'll give him priority on ice time if he's not traded. The other guys can take their time to develop. Aliu would be the best choice in my opinion.

Skille really hasn't done much to earn a roster spot, though. Both Beach and Aliu blew me away at prospect camp. I'd hope they wouldn't let contract status dictate who they might give a roster spot to.

I agree. This is a tough roster for youth to crack at this juncture. Injuries like this are about the only way for it to happen

Based on what? Just curious.

I agree about Skille seeing the ice time before the other two. We have one year to see what this kid's made of. I'd just assume not let this kid go and find out what he's made of watching him skate elsewhere. Besides, I don't want either Beach nor Aliu accruing a year towards their contract this season, if at all possible. I wouldn't mind seeing all three at various points of the season. I think it's good for these guys to get a taste of the game at this level to see the difference and have a feel for what they need to do to stay on a permanent basis.

I agree with you fully, but I believe that's exactly what they will do: let his draft and contract status give him first crack at the roster spot. Beach needs another year in juniors at least. Aliu would do a better job than Skille for sure. I hope we see Burish over any of them, but I have a feeling we'll see Skille.

Bring on Aliu!!!

I have never been a fan of Hossa and never really cared. Now that he is a Hawk, I sorta have to. When I heard this, I thought... Effin great, now I hate him more. Although I will say he will get us points and play big for us NEXT YEAR, I say bring on Aliu and give him a chance. I love watching him play and him on a line with Buff would be awesome...kickin a$$ and still scorin.

While I wouldn't be surprised to see both Aliu and Skille get a look, I'd like to use this time to work out some grinders, namely Bickell and Dowell. Bickell looks like an interesting card to have in the deck come playoff time.

I'm pretty sure Hawks brass would know the situation with Hossa. Here's Holland's version of things:

Marian Hossa's injury didn't occur during playoffs; Red Wings re-sign Evan McGrath, Ryan Oulahen
by Ansar Khan
Wednesday July 22, 2009, 4:12 PM

Wings general manager Ken Holland said Marian Hossa did not injure his shoulder during the playoffs as indicated in a story in the Chicago Daily Herald. Holland said Hossa had a slightly torn rotator cuff when the Wings signed him on July 2, 2008, but it wasn't anything significant.

"He was hurt before he got to us,'' Holland said. "Our doctors looked at him and we had conversations about whether to have surgery. Our doctors recommended he should have something done at some point but it's something he can play with.''

According to the Daily Herald, Hossa is contemplating surgery, which would idle him for the start of the season.

Stan Bowman said the injury is still considered minor and surgery is a last resort.

Right... I'd rather have a fully functional Hossa 2 months into the season (oh hey thats 2 months more rested he'll be for the playoffs) than one that is made of glass like his good buddy Mr. Havlat.

This is a weird question that relates to Hossa later in the contract.

Say the shoulder injury continues to bother him as he starts heading to the late years of the contract... Can the Hawks put Hossa on LTIR, pay him while receiving cap relief due to the injury, and just use it as a loophole to not have it count against the Cap?

It seems to be a way to circumvent the later years of the contract. They could use it as an extension to the cap basically by paying him the money w/o actually having it show up against the cap due to injury.

I can honestly say i'm clueless when it comes to detailed contract information. Would that be a loophole or would it just not work?

It was just reported on AM1000 that Hossa will undergo surgery tomorrow and the post op recovery time should be about 4 months.

Damn. Well, it's best they get it over and done with so the injury doesn't linger on in his *12* year contract. He'll be back in time for the playoffs, so there are no worries there. Plus we have an extra roster spot which the young guys can compete for. Training camp just got a little more interesting.

Doesn't really bother me. They had a plan, and it seems they feel he will be better off with the surgery. We have him for awhile and I know we can win games without him. December isn't THAT far off from the start. He is here for the long haul and I prefer that they handle this whole situation right rather than make him play anyway.

I hate to laugh....

but the funny thing is, you guys took Thomas Kopecky as well.
Paying him $1.2M per and he is more injury prone than Hossa.

My oh My, it's great for the Wings to have a Bowman or two in the Hawks front office

And we'll return the giggles if things all end up rosy here.

At least we have the depth to deal with this. I'm glad it's happening now than during the season, because the players won't get a chance to get accustomed to having him there and then have him ripped away from the lineup mid-season.

We'll just get to roll out more young studs in his absence, get a good look at the future and then in December we get an early Christmas gift in a healthy, strong Hossa. Something the Wings did not have in the Finals.

I will say I am a bit worried about his playoff performance this past season, particurally when it counted in the finals.

I am not going to put too much stock in his playoff performance if this injury has been ongoing. Let's see what happens.

Right. People are quick to bring up his past playoff performance and quick to forget his 26 points in 20 games with the Penguins in 2008. I don't want to blame last year's playoffs on the injury, but i'm fully confident he'll produce in the playoffs this year as long as his surgery really does bring him back to 100%.
