2010/2011 Prospects Thread

Forwards

69. JD Watt

Excelled again today. Has been getting better and better using his strength. As I said yesterday, if he plays with a chip on his shoulder, he is awesome.

42. Bret Sutter

Bret was very good all week. I have never seen him as strong as he has been all week. I love his strength. His attitude is awesome. I think he will be in the league. He is a prototype Sutter after allJ.

60. Mickael Backlund

Seen him in the face-off drill. There is nothing this kid can’t do. He has all the tools to make it in the NHL. He really has nothing else to prove and start his pro career. Mickael’s only weakness may be his strength, and even that is a huge improvement. You can tell that in Mickael mind there is the Flames and no other option.

68. Spencer Benett

Has looked pretty good. Needs strength, but he does have the tools to make it. I suspect that he made the right decision by going the WHL route. The Flames would rather have him in WHL than American College hockey. That should tell you right there that they think highly of him. I like his speed and shot. I think he is a diamond in the rough.

65. Henrik Bjorklund

He is very fast, and has good puck control. Henrik has a quick puck release, and is usually accurate. What I found surprising about the prospect is his strength. I thought he had a darn good camp.

57 Lance Bouma

He has skill to burn. Outstanding offensive skills. Lance hit his stride. When he starts skating, he is explosive. Simply put, he is fast. I really like his stick and what he can do with it.

74 Hugo Carpentier

His strength is his best quality. I was really hoping for a bit more out of him. He is a solid defensive specialist, but needs to improve in the offensive zone, although that might not be his game. I wanted a little more out of Hugo, being a solid prospect in the years past for the Flames.

76 Jordon Fulton

Needs some growing out. He has to get stronger, but Jordon is still young. Jordon gave up too easily. He needs to work more. He is an excellent skater. He needs more time to develop. He will be a project. I am hoping to see him when he comes out.

73 Ryley Grantham

Ryley is pretty solid on his feet. He will be a third liner who is very dependable. Grantham has been signed and it will be interesting to see where he plays next season. Only time will tell, but bulky Ryley will be given a chance by the Flames. I just do not think that he will be a top 6 forward, which worries me because we have tons of role players on this team.

64 Ryan Howse

Ryan is the fastest skater in the camp. He is terrific prospect. I was simply amazed. Outside Backlund, Watt, and Sutter, he has been the best forward. What an impression made for his first camp.

77 Aaron Marvin

Aaron is a huge power forward, with tons of upside. I really liked how he fared in the drills. His strength is awesome. I really think Aaron will be a good one.

48 Greg Nemisz

Greg is a major prospect. Greg has great shot, he is a good passer, and he is very smart out there. Greg seems to think, does not throw the puck blindly, and uses his head. He will get stronger. Love his kid.

69 Mitch Wahl

Mitch has the tools to succeed, but needs to work on a few things. The first is his shot. He has to hit the net more often. He has great wheels, tons of finesse, but he has to finish. Defensively, he has to be more aware of what is around him.

75 John Armstrong

Armtstrong has great speed. It is really too bad that he is still recovering from his injuries. I was really looking forward to seeing him.

Defense

54 Keith Aulie

Keith has great outstanding defensive zone coverage. He is a very solid stay home defensemen. He needs to grow out more, and improving his skating skills. I feel bad for him just simply because he is on the wrong team. The Flames have the best prospects when it comes to defense, bar none. He has to get stronger in his legs. Defensively though, he is awesome.

67 Gord Baldwin

Gord has a great reach with his stick that he uses to his advantage. He reads the play well and often poke checks with his reach. He uses his strength and size to his advantage. One of the many reasons why I love our defense for years to come.

66 T.J. Brodie

T.J. has a great shot and is fairly strong. I like his defensive awareness. I like his offensive skills, and he is very good defensively.

49 Brad Cole

I really like Brad. He has a great shot and plays with an edge. He is very good defensively and has speed to help out with other player’s defensive mishaps. On most teams, Brad would be higher on the depth chart. It’s really too bad he is with the Flames.

51 Tim Erickson

Has great puck skills. Good skating skills, but needs to get stronger. Tim has to develop his skill at skating backwards. I love this kid, but I do believe it will take a few years before he is ready.

61 John Negrin

Only had one bad day, otherwise he was very good. John is very smart great skater, and a very good defender. John did a very good job in the two-on-two drills. I like his ability to adapt to situations.

56 Matt Pelech

Best dman prospect on the Flames. Matt is ready. On any other team, he would probably be a 4 or a 5. I consider Matt the best candidate for the number 7 slot. The only reason he won’t be is for his development playing in B.C. so he can get playing time.

43 Keith Seabrook

Great with the stick. I can really tell this kid is going to be an offensive powerhouse. I love his ability to get rid of the puck. I cannot believe how mature this kid looks on the ice. I believe that Seabrook was a steal by Sutter from the Capitals.

Goalies

35 Leland Irving

Leland’s strength is his glove hand and controlling rebounds. He is quick and plays his angles very well. The key to Leland’s success is not getting caught out of position. He has really improved with his stick play, and is a terrific prospect.

36 Matt Keetley

Matt is the most agile goalie of the threesome. He made the best save in the camp, especially, with his body diving back on rebounds. He is fast, has great reflexes. The only worry is controlling rebounds, again another great prospect.

37 Joni Ortio

Joni has a great glove hand. He has a lot of promise, but needs to adjust to the North American rink. He was caught out of position once in a while, but again, I think that is adjusting to the North American rink. He has one more year on his contract. Then I think Sutter will bring him to the WHL. I think Regina owns his rights, not sure though.

Back from the camp today; really excited about the prospects. There is a lot to be excited about.

69. JD Watt

Excelled again today. Has been getting better and better using his strength. As I said yesterday, if he plays with a chip on his shoulder, he is awesome.

Good work flamestr! Thanks for the inside scoop! I am anxious for this season to start. On one hand I don't want the summer to end and on the other hand bring on hockey. Do you think any of the rookies will end up with the flames this year? If so who has the best shot? Thanks!

Great summary...you maybe a little too optimistic on some of the guys as it's unrealistic to think all or even the majority will have an impact in the big leagues.

Having said that though, within a couple short years Sutter has re-stocked the prospect shelves amazingly well. SO much so that Flames fans not only have to be excited about the present squad, but for the future for years to come. We're solid at most if not all positions. About my only wish would be for one more super blue chip forward.

Great post, once again, and thanks for the effort of all the summaries!

Was at the camp the last two days so I'll share my thoughts.

Backlund was injured Friday afternoon and didn't take part in the afternoon and Saturday's sessions. Hugo Carpentier also left yesterday afternoon and wasn't at the practise this morning.

Pelech-Looks outstanding. I'm a huge fan of him and he is close for sure. If our defence wasn't so good and already locked up he could definetly be in the starting 6 this season. I could even see him forcing his way onto the team.

Negrin,Seabrook,Erixon,Brodie- All tremendous skaters. Have to really like the mobility of all of these guys. Brodie really impressed. Erixon looked pretty good as well.

Aulie- Skating is the biggest issue, but I don't think it is that bad. Give him some time and he'll be fine. Has a good reach and uses his stick pretty well.

Bjorklund,Howse- Both guys are really skilled. Soft hands and for a first time viewing I was impressed with both of them.

Marvin-Like his size and showed some decent hands. Average skater though.

Sutter-Got to love the kid. I've always been impressed with him the past two years and this year was no different. Always 100% and he'll be an NHLer.

Watt-Not a very good skater. Does show some decent skill though in the drills.

Nemisz-Looked good for the most part. I'd say his skating seems to have improved.

Goalies: Ortio didn't look very good on Friday. Quite a bit better today though. Irving looks great. Keetley also looked very good and I hope he can have a rebound year.

Any questions about the other guys feel free to ask and I'll try to answer.

I agree that alot is overly optimistic... especially about Pelech... 4th or 5th defenseman on any other team in a league? not a chance... maybe #6/7 on most teams in the league but thats about it

Thanks for the info. I would like to see two of: Backlund, Nemisz, Sutter, Pelech, Negrin make the club. That would make for an even younger Flames team and speed will continue to increase...

Actually, the take on Pelech is not what I was referring to. He looked extremely poised from what I saw of the prospect camp. On a good many other teams, he might very well crack the lineup as top 4/5 dman.

yeah he looked poised... against other rookies this seems to be ignored here... its like being the smartest in a remedial class... doesn't make you a genius... i like Pelech and was happy what I saw from him in the playoffs and he could steal a top 6 spot from Pardy IMO... but he is not a top 4 defenseman by any stretch of the imagination... he could be given time but not yet

May be you are a Flames PR man?

Seriously, you can eliminate the bad ones from this camp but other than that nothing really means much until the real camp. That's where they separate the men from the boys.

Who knows what will transpire. After listening to Sutter, he seems to feel some of the kids are going to push for a spot. I wouldn't be surprised to see his own son on the big teams roster before the end of the season.

Very good point. Guys like Backlund, Pelech and Irving should be looking good at these camps. They are the closest and best prospect at each position right now. I loved how all 3 of them looked, but now they have to do it in the main camp. I feel Pelech and Backlund will be given a long look, but ultimately I think both will be in Abbotsford for the start of the season. Injuries happen though and both players will see time in the NHL this season. No doubt about that.

I totally agree with your assessment here. Unless there is another move trade wise; i can't see either starting with the big club. However, having this kind of depth and future potential is encouraging.

With Pelech last year in camp i remember people were saying he had a much better camp than Pardy, but was on a two way and not a one way so Pardy got more ice time.

If we can move some salary like Sarich at 3.5M apx, i could see Pelech starting with the big club. However, i think Darryl is big on keeping Sarich.

If they want to go with defense first, they need to keep Sarich...dont want to depend on a bunch of green dmen....Giordano, Pardy, Pelech, Kronwall....

I'm glad others are sold on Backlund because I'm sure not. I watched every game in the Memorial Cup and he was totally invisible. He did absolutely nothing, which is disappointing in such an important tournament. Hopefully that was just a bad week he had, but I don't expect too much out of him after seeing that performance.
