Minor detail, but one worth noting.

Instead of getting 550k in the 1st year, he'll actually get 500k in year 1, and 550k in year 2. Minor detail obviously, but for accuracy when evaluating the Lightning's cash payroll... thought I'd mention it.

So what is next on Lawtons to do list? He still has the following to do:

Sign RFAs Lashoff, Karsums, Lundin
Address top 6 winger hole
Trade away spare assets

Number 2 and 3 could be one in the same. I'd think Lashoff is top priority as far as resignings go. My best case scenario would be getting those 3 signed, getting Tanguay here for 1 or even 2 years at 4m or under, and trading away all spare assets that he believes are expendable to stockpile picks.

Get back to work Lawton, no rest for the weary.

I know that is an absolutely ridiculous contract, Lawton must have gotten him really drunk or something to get him to agree to that.

I think what mattered for Smaby was the fact it was a one-way deal. But great work Lawton!

Not that the one-way contract guarantees Smaby a roster spot -- "I definitely have to earn my spot. It's not a walk-through, by any means" -- it's just that having a contract with guaranteed money "gives me a better shot than anything else."
Quote:
Smaby said that after resting for two weeks after the season, he was back in the gym. The foot, which did not require surgery, is in good shape.

"I feel what I did any guy fighting for a spot would do," Smaby said of playing hurt. "It definitely (stunk) losing, but I learned a lot from last year, and I played in a lot of different situations. I just pushed myself to get better every day."

His hard work this summer, he said, has added eight pounds to his 6-foot-5 frame. Even so, at 240 pounds, he is a lot leaner.

"He's worked his (butt) off," Smaby's agent, Ben Hankinson said. "You're going to see a much-improved Matt Smaby."

Very nice numbers on this deal, hopefully he ends up the #5-6 guy... because if he gets waived, hes as good as gone now, moreso than ever.

Luckily in Tampa, the influence of Barnum and Bailey allows us to love and accept clowns.

I, for one, welcome our new clown overlords.

Why did u guys resign Kraijek when you then go out and sign Walker ,Burns ,Smaby?

did you not already have a top 4 set and enough on the bottom pairings?

Burns? We have another Wild defensman in Foster, but sadly not Burns.

Krajicek was insurance in case the other deals that followed didn't go through. I remember Lawton saying that if he didn't get guys like Ohlund and Walker, there really wasn't a plan B. The only players with contracts at the time where Ranger and Meszaros

Hale was a first round pick so he's more talented than a non first round pick like Ranger to HF posters.
