2nd line scoring - Check
Fill prospect pool - Check
Goaltending coach - Check
Establish Defense - X (I mean Establishing our D to the league, our D looks quite good despite what you downers think)
Decide lines that have chemistry - X
AHL team - X

Woo! three out of six on my list.

With a name like Peter Peeters, I'll bet he's one tough mutha.

Won a Vezina back in the day.

I was kind of hoping it would be someone like Guy Hebert. Was anyone else?

Such a shame he never played for the Peterborough Petes.

I would have liked someone like Guy to be goalie coach, but that's mostly due to my nostalgia. I like the signing. Plus he used to be the Oilers goalie coach. Too bad Burke isn't GM anymore, we'd hear long and hard about how we poached him from the Oilers.

Fun fact-Mario Lemiuex's first NHL goal was against Peeters.

Peeters' accomplishments are pretty amazing.

- 29-5-5 record as a rookie
- Helped the Flyers to a 35-game undefeated streak, the longest in NHL history.
- 1982 Vezina winner
- Gold medal with Canada

Fun fact: According to Stan Fischler (in the book "Off Side"), back when Peeters was with the Flyers, Philadelphia Daily News reporter Jay Greenberg apparently roasted Peeters at an event. The next day after practice, Peeters enlisted Glen Cochrane and Behn Wilson to drag Greenberg into the showers where Peters "stripped and grotesquely sodomized Greenberg with a light bulb."

Yikes. Can you imagine if something like that happened today?

Peters had a notorious temper as a player (he was very Hextall-esque) and apparently as a coach. There was an incident last year where he (the goalie coach, mind you) lit into the Oilers skaters for lackadaisical practice.

I'm sure Murray knows what he's doing, but having him on the coaching staff doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.

Seems like a good goalie back in the day.

But I feel like Edmonton goaltending has been pretty poor the past few years. Just think about 05-06, where they were a good team stuck with horrible goaltending, and only squeaked into the playoffs when they got Rolosson. Guys like Garon, Markannen, Salo, or their prospects (Deslauriers, Dubnyk) don't seem to progress. The disclaimer, though, is that their defense has been pretty horrible a lot of the time because Kevin Lowe is too dumb to field a balanced team (too many defensive types or too many offensive types).

I dunno about this. I'm a little worried, but I don't detest it or anything. I'll call it "cautiously concerned."

Well, seeing as the Kings have Hextall in their organization, perhaps we can have a battle of the old goalies.

I can't seem to find anything about the Greenberg incident online (after searching out of curiosity.) Although I wouldn't be surprised, I just went through a few youtube videos and there's several with Peeters in fights with other goalies. Ah, the 80's.

Pete worked wonders recently with a French Canadian goalie...

I sure hope Hiller can play 82 games.

good job Murray! Sounds like a pretty good replacement for Francois Allaire.

Google "Pete Peeters" and "light bulb" and you'll see a few HFBoards threads on it. I have Fischler's book: he devotes a whole chapter to the incident. I remember hearing about it when it happened (I don't recall sodomy being mentioned, but then I was eleven years old and I'm sure I didn't even know what the word meant) but it was swept under the rug pretty quickly. Amazingly, there were never any legal repercussions. Peeters was traded to the Bruins in the offseason and Greenberg let the matter drop.

Poached? He was finally fired I think he might be getting a little old for the game. The dynamics of goaltending have changed drastically over the last few years and judging by comments from media, personnel and players he's yet to adapt. I know Garon didn't deal well with him, he wanted to bring in his own coach.

Also Salo was a great goalie... just not after his little blunder.

He was, but he went through different styles during his career.
In the beginning with Philadelphia and Boston, he was this great reflex goalie with some butterfly, that was much different from the stand-up goalies during that time.

Then during his time with Washington, he was strictly a stand up goalie - I mean, he rarely bent his knees. Just stood there and let the puck hit him. Think 'Le Golie'.

Then when he went back to Philadelphia, holy crap, he was this amazing reflex goalie again.

Good luck.

I was being a bit sarcastic about the irrational dislike some Oilers fans have for Burke

To be honest after looking at the goalies Peeters has coached and their stats for the team, its a bit underwhelming. Of course stats don't tell everything, but its a bit interesting to see.

As for Salo, I always liked him. I was sad to see his NHL career kind of fizzle out the way it did. Then again there was the Olympic "incident", then the Comrie rumors a year after involving Salo, all which may have played a role in his downfall.
