Wellwood Arbitration - Re-signed @ $1.2 million

In about 6 hours Gilman and Wellwood's agent Mike Liut will face-off for the Wellwood arbitration hearing and it looks like the gloves will come off. The Canucks will point to a 21 game goalless drought and 7 healthy scratches to try to make their case.

Walk away rights are available to the Canucks only if the Arbitrator awards a contract of more than $1.57 million. Less than that the Canucks must pay. The arbitrator has 48 hours to issue his decision from the close of the hearing and the Canucks then have a further 48 hours to exercise their walk away rights if available.

A settlement is not expected unlike the majority of the cases filed this off-season:

Canucks fight could get nasty in corners

Wellwood arbitration ‘can be unpleasant’ as player’s conditioning issues and goal drought will be raised
...
Both sides exchanged briefs 48 hours before Tuesday's hearing. Those briefs include the salary number each side is seeking.

After hearing briefs from both sides, the arbitrator is free to choose either number or anything in between. A ruling is expected no later than Thursday, 48 hours after the hearing.

If Wellwood happened to be awarded a contract worth more than $1.57 million, the Canucks could choose not to pay it and Wellwood would become an unrestricted free agent. The Canucks would be obliged to pay anything less than a salary of $1.57 million.

The Canucks will be represented by Gilman, two lawyers and a league official at Tuesday 's hearing. Wellwood will attend the hearing along with Liut, a lawyer who will present his side's brief, and several NHL Players' Association officials.

It is rumoured that Gilman has brought along a visual aid to assist the Canucks presentation at the insistence of Mike Gillis:

I thought you could walk away from any contract?

I can live with 1 year at $1.5M; a player playing for a bigger contract is a good thing.

Hopefully Gilman has surfed CDC and HF to pick up some quick fat jokes.

No.

There is the dollar limit and if the team elects a two year deal the walk away rights are limited to taking a one year deal and at the conclusion the player becomes UFA.

It is my understanding the Canucks have elected a one year deal.

Either way 1 year for 1.5 mil would be alright for Wellwood.

Except that if he gets somewhere in between 1.1 and 1.5 we're stuck with him. So not really.

I bet he's asking for 1.4 and Canucks want 1.1 or something.

Anything under $1.57 million and the Canucks have no choice but to take the award.

Based on Gillis' comments at the State of the Franchise (about the "right" and "wrong" way to conduct arbitration), I doubt the arbitration hearing will be "nasty" the way arbitration was done in the Burke era.

We're not stuck with him. We could trade him or waive him.

Maybe not so different?

"The nature of the process can be unpleasant, but hopefully it is done in a professional manner," Gilman said Monday from Toronto. "Obviously, the player goes through it hearing from the club why he's not worth the amount he is seeking. And he has to hear why and that can sometimes be difficult for a player."

I think the Canucks reasons will be logical than the character assassinations of the Burke era

Gillis was one of the toughest agents around - I do not see him changing all that much as the GM.

As long as we get him under contract, I'm fine with it, he's versitille enough to be place almost anywhere in the line-up and depth is never a bad thing especially with our luck. I just want Sundin to come back, and I'll be a much happier fan than I am now.

Gillis was also one of the most successful agents. He realizes you can't completely destroy the organization's relationship with the player.

Same here, Wellwood sucked during the regular season and he should be the odd man out with the influx of forwards we got right now.

Yeah. Not really a fan of using a roster spot on him.

Bad move by Wellwood to take the Canucks to arbitration.

might be good for him, odds are he gets something more than his QO and less than the 1.57, so he'll be making more than his QO somewhere for sure. Plus if an arb awards him 1.75 or so, the Nucks walk, it seems to me he could get a deal somewhere else, there are lots of teams short on talent.

Grabner could always use a center in Manitoba.

Good point. I'm not sure Gillis' toughness as a player agent transcends to his new GM role. Wetcoaster might be right, but it seems, given the nature of Gillis' reign, that he is concerned with making players *want* to play in Vancouver.

From what I've seen presented in the last season, it seems Gillis has attempted to depict Vancouver as not only a beautiful city to play in, but a place where players are catered to and pushed to their limits.

I don't think abusive relationships between players and himself would aid this cause.
