The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have named Greg Gilbert the head coach of their American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

“We are pleased to add Greg to our organization as head coach of the Phantoms,” said Holmgren. “He has a wealth of coaching experience at many levels and has shown a unique ability to work well with younger players.”

“I am very honored to be a part of the Philadelphia family and organization,” said Gilbert. “I am greatly looking forward to the opportunity to working with the young players in this organization. I am a patient coach. I have spent a lot of time working with young players and teaching them the game and helping them hone their skills and become better individuals. I am also looking forward to teaching them what it is like to be a part of a team and what the expectations and accountabilities are.”

Sounds good to me. He seems like a winner. This is an important position, because of a lot of those Phantoms are going to be Flyers in the next 2-3 years.

Pretty good coach right here. Also, he is getting a pretty stacked Phantoms team. I am excited to see how they do.

Nice choice - I liked Gilbert in Mississauga (although I did bean him with a teddy bear!). I think he'll do very well with the young Phantoms especially.

I personally don't know much about him, but people seem to like him so I'll go with it's a good hiring.

Way off topic, but have you seen the feud Steven Colbert had with the Generals? He has a fear of bears (in character, at least) and he picked on Oshawa for throwing their charity teddy bears during a game against Saginaw. The Spirit even re-named their mascot after Colbert

Well, looks like they finally went outside of the organization to find a coach.

Thought he'd be with the Isles as an assistant this year. Quality guy.

I like what he said there in that highlighted quote... If that is his true feelings and intent, I am quite happy with his hiring.

On paper its stacked, but it's also very young with no experience in net. This team has the potential to be good, but I wouldn't be surprised if they start off slow and gradually get better as the season goes on (assuming the rookie goalies play well).

I honestly cannot wait, its less than 45 mins from my house to where the Phantoms are playing. Alot better than the 4 hours and 15 min drive from me to PA :-p

Fail. He's made a mess of everything everywhere he's been. Oh well, guess he should fit in quite well here.....

Because Cuffy isn't posting as much anymore, and someone had to take over the negative Nelly spot for this board?
