If one has potential to be a 4th liner and one has potential to be a 2nd pair defenseman, this shouldn't even be close.

Potential can be a funny thing (see Nik Z). And also i think it was in a topic before where g00se had a two hour conversation with Adam Graves. Graves was strongly passionate about Byers having some special talent and predicted him being a #1 or #2 center. It may be why a lot of people are picking him over the defensemen (although i picked the defensemen myself.

I stand corrected, apparently Graves wasn't talking about Byers and if he was, I can't seem to find it. Graves called him a fantastic hitter and said that he'd play well under Torts, can't find anything concerning the #1 or #2 center for Byers.

Your definitely confusing him of someone else. Graves never said that about Byers and Byers is a winger.

Yea i am unfortunately, I could have sworn though there was someone Adam Graves talked about who had the potential to be something really special as center. I'm pretty sure it was one of our prospects and i don't think he was talking about Ansimov, oh well.

went with Byers over TK... While I think TK has a higher ceiling than byers, i think Byers is much more likely to reach his ceiling of 3rd line wing, than TK has of being #3-4 dman. Byers should have been in the NHL last year if it wasn't for our yutz of a coach who didn't have a clue how to utilize any personnel. He also scores well in the AHL.

Kundratek is more likely going to be a type of player that pans out real well and hits his potential or he doesn't make the NHL

he was saying that about Derek Stepan, our 2nd round pick from 2008 who is also teammates with Ryan McDonagh at the University at Wisconsin. thats who Adam Graves was referring to.

kundratek has the potential to be a monster physical defenseman with a blast from the point. his play at the WJC's last year was nothing short of impressive (i believe he was out for just 0 or 1 of the goals against the game they got destroyed by canada) and from all i've heard of his play up in canada, he's only getting better.

Byers IS a 4th liner that is the difference... Worse case you get an NHL 4th liner, best case a 3rd liner... With Kundratek you have a higher ceiling but you don't know..

Byers rookie AHL season in 06-07.

Hartford's top 5 leading scorers. Keeping in mind a lot of first and second year players and a very defense minded system in place. Note he outpoints fellow rookie Brandon Dubinsky. Note as well the penalty minutes. He's an agitator as well as a guy who doesn't mind dropping the gloves. There are a number of opinions on actually on how good a fighter he is. I don't think I can speak all that well about that.

1. Dawes (age 21--2nd AHL season)--65gp-27g-33a-60pts-29pm
2. Callahan (age 21-1st AHL season)--60---35--20--55----74
3. Byers (age 20----1st AHL season)--78---17--30--47----213
4. Immonen (age 24-2nd AHL season)-54---20--26--46---- 30
5. Dubinsky (age 20-1st AHL season)--71---21--22--43----115

Byers second AHL season--07-08. Top 5 scorers.

1. Parenteau (age 24) 75--34--47--81--81
2. Moore (age 23)-----72--26--40--66--31
3. Hutchison (age 27)-67--18--46--64--66
4. Korpikoski (age 21 2nd AHL season) 79--23--27--50--71
5. Byers (age 21 2nd AHL season) 73--23--23--46--184

which shows me that in his first two AHL seasons Byers was very competitive with players of his own age group and players with more experience. Last year was cut short by injuries but the small window of games (9 regular season games--7 points) he played showed enough where he might have had an even more productive year. When you are your teams third leading scorer one year and fifth leading scorer the next (as a 20-21 year old) you are an important part of its success. This guy IMO may be a very pleasant surprise for us this year.

Can we stop with this? You can be absolutely, 100% convinced that Dane Byers is NHL ready, and you might even be right...but until the guy suits up and establishes himself as an NHL player, he is NOT a 4th liner right now. Worst case he's a career AHL scorer.
