Looks like he will be unless his agent has a change of heart in the next 72 hours, give or take.

What if that is not case he resigns with the Hurricanes!?

Just but what if you are right where do you see Cole signing?

The cap cieling isn't going up (well it is but all of 100K) so there's a decent chance we get him back.

There aren't a lot of teams with payroll room that will spend like crazy
Those that DO have it and could go after him:
Anaheim
Atlanta
Colorado (depending on the goalie they sign and how much it costs them)
Columbus
Minnesota (depending on if they can get Gaborik back or not)
Islanders
Toronto

There are a plethora of other free agents that are out there that will be in higher regard this offseason. Gaborik, Havlat, Hossa, Sundin, Tanguay, Koivu, Guerin, Kovalev, Gionta, Cammalerri, the Sedins, Antropov... and that's just the forwards. I'm hoping the Canes can either re-sign Cole or bring in a guy like Knuble due to this. I honestly think hitting free agency might be a mistake for Cole, but that depends on what JR was offering to him.

Yeah I would agree with that. Although if they don't move him count them out IMO. Also depends on the return, how much salary they're taking back, etc.

I said from the start that I wouldn't even offer Cole or Seidenberg contracts, because I didn't think either would be worth what they were going to get. So I'm not really worried about all tihs, unless LaRose doesn't sign. Then I'm gonna be grumpy.

As for Cole, if the Senators want to pay him big $$, feel free. JRs record for allowing free agents who price themselves out of our salary structure to bolt is pretty darn solid. You'd think Ottawa would have learned their lesson with Gerber, but I guess not.

I think it's a good idea to keep Cole under $2.75 million, yes. At anything more than that, bad idea. Even if he reverts to 55-60 point form.

I think it's a good idea... as long as the money is right. With the way this UFA season is setting up there's nothing to say we won't be able to replace him much cheaper with someone like Knuble or Bertuzzi. I don't like Bertuzzi at all (he's a malcontent, an egotistical punk and I still dislike him from the Moore incident), but fact of the matter is he scored at about the same rate as Cole did this past year for less then half the price.

Nobody here is saying they don't want him. The problem seems to be that he thinks he's worth more than he is. Otherwise I think we'd see him signed by now.

I think Cole will end up signing with us for a conservative amount, but it would shock me if he ended up in Ontario playing for either Toronto or Ottawa. To me the idea has been he has always needed Staal, but could it perhaps be he is an East player oppose to a West. I am unfortunately in Alabama and don't get to watch our Canes much so I can't really answer my own question.

Cole is unlikely to sign in Canada. He has his home and family here and he is a US player who seems to prefer less spotlight.

I wouldn't rule out New York, as in the Islanders, as a possible destination. That would be an ideal place for him to get first line minutes perhaps with Tavares to potentially establish his value again.

Yea I never thought about it like that, plus NYI could fork out some change to lure him.

That was kind of my line of thinking too. With them having lost Billy Guerin, Mike Comrie, and Doug Weight being there as a familiar face it may not be totally off the board to say Erik could end up there. If anybody could pony up $4 million for Cole and not look *totally* stupid, it would be that club with as much trouble as they've had drawing marquee talent.

All I have to say is WOOT!

Erik's staying put, baby! He's a Carolina Hurricane for the next 2 years at least.

btw...I just re-watched the Boston series and did anyone else notice Erik did some awesome work during those games?

I mean he didn't light up the scoreboard, but he dished out the hits, went hard to the net, did some great work on Chara, came back for some timely defensive plays, and was generally a big presence out there.

Really made me glad he's back for next season. I still say he had nagging injuries, also. They'll be gone when the season begins and I'm optimistic he'll be a big part of our offense going forward.

Erik Cole's contract is one that I have come around to as the other moves of free agency have revealed themselves.

I think what happened with Erik Cole is that he created unrealistic expectations for himself with the season he had in 05-06 prior to being injured that put us into a false sense of him being a 70-80 point per season guy when he really is not.

What he is, however, is a very strong 50-60 point per year player with a very impressive physical game.

Regardless, it's going to be nice to see 26 back when the season starts. He should always have a home here.
