I can't freaking believe Slats couldn't find one person to take Zherdev.

Now it looks like Columbus is the winner after all. But you never know whats going to transpire after a deal. At the time it was what the Rangers needed.

Maybe Columbus had the inside track on Zherdev and knew an arbitration would arise once he turned RFA. Smart on their part, if they didnt want to deal with all of that for a player with Z's reputation.
Toots wasnt going to get us into the playoffs last year. His role has been filled...you could have moved him for a better deal though... perhaps.

I liked the trade. Still do. It was worth a shot. All trades are gambles

Callahan...dubinsky...kotalik...drury....all have legit shots to score over 20 goals..
Drury is a stretch? Ok....how so?

Uh, Higgins.

Drury a stretch? hes scored 20 in every NHL season hes played except for one.

Callahan, Dubinsky, Lisin + Kotalik might be good for 20. Who knows maybe Anisimov can get upwards of 15.

The Rangers have definitely improved from 200 goal output of last season. Probably more in the range of 225-245...

i think 5 20 goal scorers on this team is a serious pipe dream

we don't have any playmakers to create space for our "scorers"

i think that by seasons end - a lot of us will miss z and even more will miss scotty's ability to gain the zone (even if once he gained it he did nothing)

this is a very 1 dimensional team and sadly that one dimension is not scoring but "grit" which will make for nice entertainment but is not the right recipe for winning IMO

I could see Sather just being a dick and signing him last minute to get his hopes up that he would be a free agent.

Great asset management by the Rangers...now we have the cap space to fill holes.

So can the Rangers bid along with everyone else now on Zherdev? Whats the rule there.

As in if Z's best offer as a ufa is 3 million can the Rangers come in at 3.1 and sign him?

like we said, he can now negotiate with whom ever he wants. he and his agent got what they wanted. we got rid of an enigma who was going to get 4 mil to underachieve for a torts led team. torts and nik would not have been able to coexist.

he will find a job and someone will be giddy and full of hope until he suits up and plays disinterested hockey for them. its inevitable. even though he wont play for us, he's still nik zherdev

and getting something for him wasnt possible when the other gms knew he could be had on the market. this is what happens when the players reputation preceeds him.

good luck nik.

now slats needs to make something happen.

Gaborik is about as good as anyone and is a gamebreaker. So yeah, I think he scares people. After that we have a bunch of 2nd/3rd line guys who will all have to chip in. This is a transition year with a lot of new guys and youth on D. I'm happy to just watch them play. I think next year and the year after we'll see a more well rounded team.
