I was just thinking the same thing---how great is it knowing that every year for the next 4-5 years we could have a d-man cracking the line up.That's why everyone wants to deal from our strength.

In three years, our defense could look something like this...

Staal-MDZ
Sanguinetti-Girardi
McDonagh-Redden

It's hard to say how these players will develop, and I'd bet they don't all make it within the organization. Even so, having Staal as your shutdown D is a good place to start. Redden as a third D will be painful though, so its lucky they have some young talent coming along.

Absolutely tough to swallow that Redden thing, however in 3 years, Redden can be bought out for around a 1.5m cap hit over 4 years.

Oh? If so, that's very reasonable.

Sigh....is it true that all Ranger fans share the same brain cell?

SALARY CAP. Z puts the Leafs over the cap unless they send some salary back or a 3rd team is involved.

I'm also stunned. I fail to believe they would have gotten NOTHING for him on the trade market (even a low pick or prospect if desperate would have been better than 0). So why let him go?

I'm guessing the GMs interested thought they were doing Sather a favour by taking Zherdev off his hands and expected a deal with NYR giving up more. Or there was too much salary coming back. Zherdev was about to become a UFA soon enough, so maybe the teams that thought they could get a similar $$ number from him didn't feel the need to make a trade.

They would have had to take salary back if they traded him. This wasn't practical, so they had to let him walk.

To trade him, they would have had to agree to the judgement and signed him The Rangers are screwed with the cap. They can't risk taking any salary back.

I failed to see how a defense of...

Left handed - Left handed
Right handed - Right handed
Left handed - Left handed

can move the puck as effectively as a Left handed - Right handed pairing.

There is a reason why right handed Ds are coveted, because they can pair with left handed Ds.

In three years I see,

Staal, Girardi
Redden, Sanguinetti
McDonagh, Gilroy
