It not about getting beat in a trade. Sather was never going to get equal value for Z in this situation.

But tell me how letting him walk for nothing is better than letting him go for a mid-round draft pick, or a prospect, or anything tangible?

The one thng I agreed with Brooks about Zherdev was that the guy didn't want to play here anymore.

I can live with that and am not about to complain about letting him walk. I believe that any trade offer for him involved salary coming back that Sather felt we didn't need.

Also, signing him and trading him would guarantee he'd get the $3.9 million this year and that would be very upsetting to Larry Brooks.

Kind of ironic last week's Rangers Classic on MSG was the Zherdev game vs Pitt

Can the Rangers bid on him as a UFA?

So many NHL teams are up against the cap and most of the rest are at their internal cap. A handful of teams have cap room to add without subtracting. Zherdev now joins the ranks of NHL umemployed looking for a contract. Khl is his next stop.

So we traded Tyutin for 1 season of Zherdev and a 2nd round pick for a couple months of Antropov. They did help us win 3 playoff games though!

Doesn't really matter does it? I mean it seems pretty sure that he'll go to Russia if he doesn't get paid what he wants here.

4 million to use elsewhere now.

giving 4 mil to zherdev would have been a mistake. he doesnt compete. period.

i would prefer to use that cash for 2 players who can help us more.

i agree with this decision.

Fire Sather.

Incompetent bafoon.

You DO NOT let a 24 year old 20+ goal 50+ point player walk FOR FREE. Under ANY circumstances.

Absolutely PATHETIC asset management.

Inexcusable.

We agree !

Seriously, this guy has great moves but he was never gonna be a Torts guy, now we have cash to fill other holes, that to me is a good trade.

Oh my God Eklund is such a dumb***, he just posts should the Rangers walk? Hello idiot if you were a big time blogger like you say you are you'd know the outcome already! Especially when your Rangers blogger posted it on your site. Total on this one

It will take Zherdev two weeks to realize he's not going to get what the arbitrator awarded him on the open market. Then he'll look at the KHL. By the end of the month, I expect he will have signed with Ufa so he can play with his buddy.

dumb... Zherdev @ 1 season of $3.9 mil is much better than Kotalik for 3 seasons @3mil no matter how you slice it.

So to recap the offseason, we added a crapload of scoring wingers, and than decided to get rid of our top two playmakers and passers.

So now we have the all grit, but can't pass team to set up the goalscorers. Fantastic.

Dubi is our best playmaker, and that's not saying much b/c he hasn't figured it all out yet on how to take the next step in setting up an offense.

lol

It would be poor asset and cap management to sign him for 3.9 and not be able to move him for anything also. It was a lose-lose situation.

Relax...NYR now has cap space and there are players out there they can go after to fill holes. this was a domino that was just waiting to fall. The offseason is far from over.

Do you not think Sather knows that? I mean don't get me wrong, I think Sather is as much of a buffoon as most, but if a worthwhile deal was out there, don't you think he would have taken it?

You have to accept a few realities here. Zherdev has been around for a while. The book is out on him and other GM's know the baggage that comes with the talent. Couple that with the salary cap and it's no surprise that teams aren't knocking down the door to take on a talented $4M headache that may be completely useless come playoff time.

It's very possible that the only deals out there were for similar talented players with baggage, and with the Rangers situation, u have to ask yourself if taking on another one of those players is even worth the trouble.

Our top line on paper is gone from last year: Naslund-Gomez-Zherdev, talk about a makeover

so basically our offense will run like this...

defensemen passes to any forward, who proceeds to skate up the side get to about the top of the circle and fire the puck directly into the goalies chest praying for somebody to be in a position for a rebound, b/e we don't have any players that have lots of creativit or the necessary passing skills to set up others, sans Gabby. If we don't create a ton (by that I mean like 15) two on ones per game we are going to have a lot of trouble scoring. People don't realize how much we will miss both Gomez and Zherdev.

3.9 for one year.

He leaves at the end of the season.

Don't fool yourself into thinking he wouldn't have been able to be moved later in the year.

HORRIBLE asset management.

Wow, he saved some cap space.

Cap space he will probably waste on garbage like Voros or Arnason.

who's out there? Tanguay? that's about it, unless we make a trade, but we really don't make good trading partners with anybody b/c of Redden, Drury and to a lesser extent Rosy.
