Why should Anton believe next year would be any different?

Or..... One could look at it that he went and screwed us over by breaking his contract, hence cutting us out of a year of his playing time. Now, he can play by the rules and play for that year at the price he said he would play for.....

I don't expect you to see it that way BB, but that's how I feel and how I think JR feels, valid or not. Once you sign that paper, you go through with that commitment even if you decide it sucks...

How'd he break his contract? He was a restricted free agent in the summer of 07 and decided that he was better off taking an offer to play first pairing time in Russia then he was taking a two-way contract from JR which would have meant a one-way ticket to the AHL for the season.

I won't say that JR isn't in his own right to say "take it or leave it", I just think JR is being a bit of a ***** about things.

JR can totally be an ass about things, that's not news to any of us. The man can hold a grudge for a very long time.

Aye. I agree... I can see both sides. It looks like neither of them are going to budge an inch, hence I say let's get whatever we're doing done and move on...

What are you guys looking for in return for Anton?

Would a prospect like Taylor Chorney be good enough?

Anything to get this over with. Jr is doing a Chinese water torture on Babs, slow death.

This is from yesterday.

Quote:
Rutherford said he had a team call to inquire about Babchuk a few weeks ago, but said that team has not called back. Babchuk, a restricted free agent, has rejected the Canes' offer of a one-year, $1 million contract.

Rutherford said any trade for Babchuk likely would not include the Canes receiving a forward in return, saying it would probably involve a prospect or draft picks.
All someone needs to do is sign Babchuk to an offer sheet and I'm sure JR will gladly take the compensation. I would think the number Babchuk is looking for would equal the Canes getting a 2nd round pick. The fact that this hasn't happened yet, leads me to believe Babchuk's agent has not been able to find a deal he likes.

JR appears to be just waiting for the deal to come to him.

Like I said, slow death. "No one called back" "we'll take a prospect or a pick, we wont get a forward"...anything, just take him...please, take him away

Do you think a team would give us a orange pylon that was approx. 6'5 in height & roughly 212 pounds so we could put it on the bench/in the press box next postseason? Maybe even stand it up off to the side of Ward for a shift or two. Seemed to be a bit of a lucky charm this past playoff.

Good defensive prospect will be great if we get for Babs.

This is a crying shame. We're going to either lose an asset or take a greatly diminished return because JR and Anton are locked in this russian roulette (pardon the pun) game. In the end, no one wins.

I think the kid still can be a good player, he may not score 16 goals again, but he might posit double-digits, is a threat and he makes teams change the way they play us in their zone. He has a little Ozolinsh in him in the other zone, but still, the pluses outweigh the minuses, don't they?

This just makes me shake my head in anger. It's so unnecessary.

At this point many of us just want this sad saga to come to its conclusion. A good defensive prospect? Future considerations? A handshake and a bag of pucks?

I don't know, I just wish this was over with so I can get back to looking forward to next season instead of reading about this interminable situation.

Babchuk wasn't invited to Team Russia's evaluation camp. Guess who was? Oleg Tverdovsky.

Babchuk's character and mood swings are well known to Russian coaching staff. They simply don't care having him in the locker room.

I heard the Russians left him off the list because he was holding out for his own room in Vancouver and guaranteed ice time. He believes 16 goals gets him past evaluation camp. His agent keeps telling the Russians he will go play for Ukraine if he has to.

on a serious note..... can you imagine Babchuk on a wider ice surface with more room behind the nets? yikes

It might take him half a period to get from the corner to the net.

well... he spent a year before last one in Omsk and put quite good numbers while playing top minutes.

But I see your sarcasm and share it.

Just checking your guy's board on Babs after seeing what occurred with Zherdev. Seems as though Zherdev was untradeable and this is one of the few interesting stories that don't include a guy named Heatley.

Pavel Valentenko?

Patrick Rissmiller?

Seriously though, if Babchuk would accept the same deal as Gilroy, I'd do Rissmiller and a 3rd. After Zherdev I don't think there is a trade market for Babchuk. Carolina gets a pick for him and NY gets to use him while costing them little because his contract could be offset by unloading Rissmiller. I doubt Carolina is looking to burn a million a year in the minors for the next 2 years though. But if a 3rd round pick is worth spending 2 million, then they could do it.

Interesting, but I doubt Rutherford would be willing to sink 2 cents into anyone even affiliated with Babs right now. He'd rather Babs rot in Russia at no cost to him at all.

Man, what I wouldnt give to know what really happened between those 2.
