A inside source tells me that Hansen called Kesler for advice and then signed the deal. (E5)

Nah, it makes Luongo expendable. $6.2M savings!

They play the same style, right?

Except Hansen wasn't low balled. He hasn't exactly established himself as an everyday NHL player yet. He looked like he was doing just that but his tail completely tailed off. Once he gets consistency in his effort and game he likely will be a full time guy but he simply isn't there yet.

For Cooke, he later signed another deal. With Bure there were other issues.

Pffftwhat, no he's not. The guys being buried on the 4th line OR a rotating scratch. If anything he's UNDERRATED.

He had the highest point pace out of all of all our secondary 40-pointish guys and yet is consistently considered the worst among them for no reason other than because he played poorly coming off injury the last time we saw him. That's ridiculous. He deserves far more respect than he's getting.... probably deserving at least an equal shot at any of those 3rd line spots... but he likely won't get that shot.

And now he's getting basically a minimum wage contract, yet we aren't going nuts over how much of a steal this is, and one guy is even complaining!

Pro-rated over 82 games,

Bernier 32 pts
Hansen 31 pts
Wellwood 30 pts
Raymond 26 pts
Pyatt 23 pts

And yet Raymond and Wellwood are treated like offensive dynamos at times and Hansen nothing but a 4th liner (I'm not complaining about this, just adding hyperbole to my point).

That's $50,000 against the cap we can't spend on a franchise defenseman!

Wow, this is fantastic.

Way to go Gillis! 14 solid NHL forwards with cap room to sign a top 4 worthy D-Man.

I'm impressed.

Damn I was really hoping to spend this cap room on Byron Ritchie or Isbister.

What happens when Rypien breaks something and misses 50 games? Although he can drop the gloves, Rypien is not an enforcer.

There's an understatment.

For a guy that wasn't good enough to crack the lineup on a regular basis last yr, he gets a lot of love.

It's the flashes i suppose.... the flashes of speed and grit..
He has no consistency whatsoever.
Highlight of his season (according to me) was his go ahead St Louis goal earlier this yr..

his hype also comes from some who certain aspects of his game, whether it be his speed or maybe the fact he's Dane. notable posters in the past calling him the next Alfredsson probably help... I have yet to see that.

Anyways... Great signing for the Canucks... a good depth piece at near minimum.
Hopefully he can earn a greater role this yr and outplay those above him in the depth chart.... something he couldn't do last yr.

And for those that have stated Hansen makes Hordichuk expendable... not quite. Players have their roles on the team that are pretty well defined... Hansen's role would not overlap much of Hordichuk's... more so Johnson, or Burrows early last yr.
Hansen - PK, tertiary scoring, energy, forecheck
Hordichuk - enforce, intimidate, forecheck, hit, energy

Yea lets soften us up even more.

Rypien is a light heavyweight, he can't take on the true goons. Taking on these kinds of guys leaves Rypien even more vulnerable to the inevitable injury. We tried it with Cowan. It was embarrassing. This is the west. Did people suddenly forget that alot of the teams we play against have idiots who like to take runs, etc?

Hordichuk is undervalued for what he brings. He is easily one of the best skating goons out there, and doesn't typically take dumb penalties. He is also fairly intimidating and has a good reputation around the league.

These kinds of guys are good for a team.

In addition, its also very easy to simply scratch Hordichuk if we are playing a soft team. Playing him 40-55 games won't hurt the team financially or on the ice, imo.

The minority have no enforcer. But I'm not even sure which teams. You could start by naming a few you think never dress enforcers.

Besides, Hordichuk isn't your typical knuckle dragger, and you know it.

Yes, I agree. I think bringing up Cooke is a lousy example. After all, Burke and management were absolutely correct, Cooke wasn't going to turn into a 20 goal scorer, and his act got tiresome fast.

I'd forgotten about that.

Slightly OT: I might be the only person who feels this way, but I really liked the job Crawford did on HNIC.

God we're loaded with forwards now. Poor Grabner. Unless he plays absolutely incredible in camp and the preseason he's likely back to Manitoba...Again.

ENFORCER?
Size?
Tall?
Big?
Massive?
Above 6'0?
Size. Size. Size.
Size does matter.
It really does.
Soft like melted butter.
Margarine?
Lard?
BRITTLE LIKE PIECRUST!
In conclusion, **** skill, bring on the goons and talentless plugs.
