Leafs Not Interested in Zherdev [but possibly Laich from Capitals]

Maple Leafs Not Interested In Nikolai Zherdev, But Can They Still CAPITALize? by Jack Porter (Scribe) Written on August 06, 2009

Despite all the speculation that the Toronto Maple Leafs have interest in signing the offensively gifted Nikolai Zherdev, USA Today's Kevin Allen is reporting that Toronto GM Brian Burke has told him that he has "no interest in signing Zherdev".
Allen "tweeted" this at 8:44am on August 5th.

However, one team that has been confirmed its interest are the Washington Capitals. The Caps are looking to make a move that would open up the necessary salary cap space to ink Zherdev.
One can see this as a very good opportunity for GM Brian Burke to convert his excess of defensemen into some picks and prospects and maybe a little offense.
Washington's primary goal is to shed salary, but you'd have to think they would love to shed salary and pick up some much needed help on the backend.

This is where Burke comes in like a knight in shining armour.
If Burke could swing a deal to send one of Jonas Frogren or Garnett Exelby to Washington, The Caps would probably be more than willing to send a package consisting of a player like Brooks Laich and a prospect or pick. Laich, 26, scored 23 goals last season with 30 assists and could help the Leafs with some much needed offense.

The Capitals in turn get a defensively responsible defenseman and about $1 million in cap space to go towards signing Zherdev. Zherdev would virtually be an upgrade from Laich so in the Caps mind they traded Laich and a pick for Frogren/Exelby and Zherdev.

Just something to chew on.

Laich is one of my favorite bottom six forwards in the league.

I'd love to have him, but I dont think 1 million in cap space is enticing enough for McPhee to pull the trigger.

Brooks Laich isn't going anywhere...He plays every forward position, he played on every line last year, he blocks shots, screens the goalie on the PP and he even played defence for 1 game...Some think he's going to be the next captain for the Caps. He's not being moved.

They're not going to just give laich away for the likes of frogren. Burke should be trying the dangle the likes of Van Ryn or Finger (if possible). Frogren can be a 7th guy and not complain about it.

from the sounds of it..it looks like the caps rather have zherdev then laich (who's just a victim to the salary cap)

I currently write for www.TOsports.ca and T.O. Sports Magazine .
But yeah, I don't see it happening.

The only player worth moving is Nylander which would fit Nik's s salary but good luck with that. With Nylanders NMC the only two options are a buyout or asking him to join the KHL (which would remove the cap space).

Otherwise, the rest of the team are important pieces.

That would be nice, and likely not going to happen.
