Rangers Prospect #26

Mitch Gaulton, the often-injured but talented defenseman made it as the last guy in our second-tier.

We will now have our bottom 5, the projects. Please keep adding your prospects to the voting rolls. The voting for the prospect list doesn't go in the same order as we add prospects. Heineken, for instance, won a spot the first round he was in.

The leftovers who get on the voting list, but won't win a spot in the top 30 will be our "honorable mentions."

Tysen Dowzak was added for this round.

TOP PROSPECTS

1. Artem Anisimov
2. Evgeny Grachev
3. Michael Del Zotto
4. Bobby Sanguinetti
5. Ryan McDonagh
6. Derek Stepan
7. Matt Gilroy
8. Chris Kreider
9. Michael Sauer
10. Ethan Werek

SECOND-TIER PROSPECTS

11. Tomas Kundratek
12. Dane Byers
13. Ryan Bourque
14. Brian Boyle
15. Corey Potter
16. Nigel Williams
17. Ilkka Heikkinen
18. David Kveton
19. Pavel Valentenko
20. Brodie Dupont
21. Carl Hagelin
22. Chris Doyle
23. Dale Weise
24. Chad Johnson
25. Mitch Gaulton

What really stands out is how bad we need a goalie prospect incase something happens to Lundqvist [Knock on wood]

We can always sign or trade for a mid-range goalie like we did with Dunham. Considering all our gapping holes, we can ill-afford to waste picks on goalies, especially considering how unpredictable their development is.

We have Chad Johnson, Zaba and Wiik, and one of them should be able to fill in behind Vally. I think Vally can reasonably speaking start, at least for a few weeks/months.

Let's fill our shortage of scoring forwards, then we'll deal with goalies. The next 3 years, all the first and second rounders should be forwards, unless someone really good slips to us. But the bias should definitely be for forwards with reasonable top-6 potential, even if they are a higher risk.

Horak. Speaking of goalie depth, add Stajcer.

The funny thing is how much these rankings, ESPECIALLY those in BH99's second tier and projects sections, will change. We could well see a goalie (or someone like Gaulton) up near 11 or 12 by this time next year.

Even in our mid-season rankings, we'll see huge changes. Gilroy may prove to be better than Anisimov, for instance. Chad Johnson can establish himself as a solid AHL starter, while Boyle or Byers will fail to make the Rangers, proving that they aren't NHL material.

McD, Heineken, Nigel Williams, Bourque, Byers, Boyle may all prove a lot to us - either showing that they have real NHL potential or not.

Many of the Hartforders on the list will change rankings also. A role player in his rookie year may become a top-6 forward in the AHL, thus boosting his ranking; or he may stay at the same level or collapse into the ECHL, thus falling off the list.

Our list at mid-season will likely be 25 and not 30 players because I expect a half dozen players on this list to drop off completely very quickly.

I'll vote to add Max Campbell.

Named the Ontario Hockey Association Junior B Player of the Year and the league's MVP for 2006-07, after recording 95 points in 47 games.

Was second on the Western Michigan with 22 points in 38 games. Last season, he went up to 31 points in 40 games, and was named Assistant Captain.

He has decent size and good skills. He might be a special team player right now, and needs to improve his 5-on-5 play, but I definitely think he should be in our top 30. If he improves his 5-on-5 play, he'll be a top-6 forward in the NHL.

Interesting that 10 of our top 25 prospects were not in the organization a year ago. Nice work Slats.

Zaborsky. Again, he's going to make a lot of people feel silly this year, IMO.

Still voting for Zaba. If Chris Holt can play in the NHL for the Blues, Zaba should be able to play for just about anyone in the near future.

Agreed. I think he's going to have one of those strong years young Pack players constantly have. Pyatt is gone and needs a replacement.

And the only prospect we lost who could've possibly been in the top 25 is Tom Pyatt, though I doubt he would've been. I don't think he's better than, say, Jordan Owens, who's not on the list.

I bet Tom Pyatt would be no more than an honorable mention had he stayed. So Slats added 10 solid prospects without losing much.

McD, Gilroy, Kreider, Werek, Bourque and Williams all have a chance to be a top-6 F or a top-4 D. Boyle is close to making the NHL. Johnson-85, Heineken and Valentenko have solid potential.

Very nice job collecting prospects. Let's hope a couple of those 10 become better than average NHLers, and a few more become role players.

With the number of prospects we have, in a half dozen years, we could be an interchangeable parts team like the Debbies of mid-to-late '90s.

I wouldn't object to him going in now as a project in our bottom 5. I am glad he wasn't in the top 25 before he proved anything. Jordan Owens is a year older, but he established himself as a top-6 AHL forward last year, when Zaborsky spent most of the year in the ECHL. Tomas Zaborsky is hoping to do next year what Jordan Owens already did. I most definitely think that at this point Owens > Zaborsky.

I totally forgot about Campbell. He is one of the most pure goal scorers in the system. Hope he gets some love soon.

Campbell will be in next round. We have the votes unless there's a sudden rally for another player.

I hope he gets voted in our top 30. He certainly deserves it. Zaba should be in at 26, Jordan Owens and Zaborsky are also likely to get in if their supporters show up to vote.

I hope Campbell gets one of the last two remaining seats. I honestly don't see any reason why Horak is getting so much love here. He has good speed and nothing little of anything else. He was able to be Super Mario until he was 18 or so among the youth, but he needs to realize that if he's to crack the NHL, he can't just hang out and wait for the puck, he will need to put in 110% effort.

I have little faith in him. It's like having Mario Lemieux at only a quarter of the offense.

Well I certainly Chad Johnson is that man.

CCHA Player of the Year. Hobey Baker finalist.
7.0 D in HF rankings. I'm sure Allaire could make such a good student of the game into a NHL backup.
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/chad_johnson

found this interview.
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article..._chad_johnson/

past Hobey Baker finalist goalies...
Yann Danis, Ty Conklin, LeNeveu , Wade Dubielewicz, Ryan Miller (he also won it the previous season), and some guy named Marty Turco didn't ever get nominated. How did that ever happen?

I think the number of Hobey Baker finalists who had decent careers outnumbers those who didn't. Keep your fingers crossed for Ocho-Cinco!
