Both teams have 20 players signed and need to sign 3 more to make a complete roster. Both teams need help in the top 6 area and depth forward area.

Vancouver probably needs more help on D than we do, we have a lot of NHL calibre D. Vancouver needs to clear some cap space in order to sign 2010 UFA's Luongo, Mitchell and RFA Kelser who will command 4-5 million per.

Montreal needs top 6 help. Even top 3 line help. They need youth on their D and need offensive skill up the middle from the prospect level as well.

This is very hypathetical, but this type of trade helps both teams in areas. Both are having to give up gems, but in order to make a trade work you both have to give to get.

To Montreal:
Edler on D $3.25 million
Burrows at LW $2 million
O'Brien on D $1.6 million (2010 UFA)
Hodgson at C $1,725 million

Total salary coming to Montreal - $8,575,000
To Vancouver:
Markov on D $5,75 million
Plekanec at C $2,75 million (2010 UFA)
Chipchura at C $900,000 (2010 RFA)
O'Byrne on D $941,667
1st Round Draft Pick

Total salary coming to Vancouver - $10,341 667

Difference in salary going each way is $1,766,667 going to Vancouver. They have the space though. They get a PP and 1st Dman in Markov, a 2nd line Centre in Plekanec to play with Demitra, a depth Dman in O'Byrne to play 6th D and a local BC boy as well and another Western boy in Chipchura to play on the 3rd and 4th lines in a checking role. Montreal also sweetens the deal by adding a 1st rounder in a very deep 2010 draft, one that is considered deeper than 2009.

Montreal gets 2 players signed to long term deals to go with the players Gainey added this summer, we get younger, Montreal get skill on the back end in Elder, more toughness in O'Brien and the gem in the deal Hodgson to play as our second line centre and a centre piece to build around with Price, Subban, Patches and our other youngsters.

It is a large deal, and these don't happen anymore but in order for Montreal to get value for Markov it has to be centred around a large deal to work.

Now blast away or build your proposal for fun.
Canucks fans will say that Hodgson is not going anywhere, but to me this is a team that is built to win for today. Nevermind that Luongo is a UFA at the end of the season, but the Sedins are in their prime and the team won the Northwest last year. That deal makes them better IMO.

Hodgson is going to be the real deal, he looks to be a Joe Sakic type player and wouldn't that be nice to have on our team for the next 10 - 12 years!

I'm with you, and making such a trade shows commitment to win now to Luongo as well by adding a player of Markov's calibre along with the Sedin twin signing. Also it goes with Gainey's plan of building a team together for the next couple of years by adding players under long term contracts in Edler and Burrows, and by adding a future star in Hodgson.

That's why I said lets have fun with this.

In reality though look at the star prospects teams have given up in the past to get star players:

Niewendyk for Iginla = Dallas Cup

Ray Bourque and Dave Andreychuk for Brian Rolston, Martin Grenier, Samuel Pahlsson and a first round draft pick = Colorado Cup

Most notable that come to mind.

I like Hodgson but still unproven at the level Markov plays. I don't like this deal you proposed and it gets pretty bad with us giving a 1st round pick.
We have one 0 game in the past 3 years wen Markov is out. I'll take Hodgson on my team any day but not with that offer so I counter with (ALll fun and games no punt )

To MTL:
Hodgson

To Van:
Pacioretty and Plekanec and our 1st/10

i wouln't want luongo even if it's against glen metropolit, his contract, and the one he will get is poison. to put 7 mil on a goalie imo kills your team.

I prefer detroit where both goalies make under 3 mil.. then you can focus on the players who will score the goals...

Markov is a super super star in the league, vancouver has one super super star in luongo , and 2 stars in teh sedins, other than that nothing,

so vancouver, no thanks

Markov will finish his career in habs uniform ..... or in the khl please no please no please no!

I don't see why we would need to trade with the Canucks.
