I hope not. Richards is a nice player and definitely would help the team, but his salary just kills any desire I would have in acquiring him. Especially considering Rozsival or Redden would have to go the other way, leaving our already thin defense even thinner.

Redden or Rozsival going the other way would be the only good thing about this deal.

For a team with cap room a Gomez/Richards player is very valuable. They help entice other players to sign. Richards is a proven player in the league. He has the cup rings, experience, has put up points and is a two-way player. His salary reflects what he has accomplished to date.

To get Richards you would have to give up something. These types of players - though expensive - add value to teams. Especially those teams that have the cap space.

Only Redden going would be good. He has a more negative value than Richards. That said, if Dubi couldn't be in a deal for Heatley, why would he be in one for RIchards? It doesn't compute.

We also would need a dman back, 3 vets aint enough.

Shedding their contracts would be nice, but it weakens our defense for sure. Unless we get an established defenseman back in a deal, it's not worth it, IMO.

I'm so conflicted on this.

On one hand, I love Dubinsky, he has "Future Captain" written all over him. He just needs to find some consistency, but he really does everything you want a young player to do.

On the other hand,

Brad Richards is a phenomenal playmaker, something the Rangers need
Brad Richards can be a PPQB, something the Rangers need (DESPERATELY!!!)
Brad Richards can contribute some goals, something the Rangers need
Brad Richards is a legit #1 Center, something the Rangers need

Anyone comparing him to Gomez is kidding themselves. That being said, he costs $7.8 Million. I know its only for 2 years, but youch. You gotta send Rosival or Redden the other way, and I don't think Dallas would be willing to do that.

I agree with all the naysayers here, but theres one thing that continues to fuel speculation and until that is settled these rumors wont go away.

Dubinksy is still unsigned.

I can't see how any of this works out either and i too think its all internet rumor fodder, but there will always be a shadow of doubt in my head until Dubi is locked up.

I just don't get why we haven't heard anything out of either camp. Is everyone involved really that tight-lipped, or are the beat writers just not prodding enough for information on this?

Please, enough is enough - sign the kid.

Richards is a better version of Gomez basically, and would be a decent step up from Gomez at center.

That said, I have no idea how the Rangers fit another huge contract (and Richards has a bigger contract than anyone on the team), while still being able to ice anything even resembling depth.

First off, in a non-cap world, I think Richards would look awesome centering Marian Gaborik. Unfortunately, Richards' salary is ridiculous and we'd need to give up assets to get him.

Speaking of assets, Glen Sather wouldnt trade Dubinsky for Dany Heatley...do you honestly think he'd trade him for Brad Richards? If this was the gameplan, we might as well have just kept Scott Gomez.

This is pretty much how I feel...Richards would be a very nice addition and I think would look great with Gaborik...he's a good player, great playmaker, but damn his contract is horrible and it's for another two years, and trading Dubinsky for that huge contract just rubs me wrong for some reason.

Plus, why in the world would Dallas do this. Trade their number 1 center for a guy who's not a legit 1st line center, and they would have to take back salary like Rozisval or Redden, so they wouldn't even be saving that much cap space. Of course there's the possibility of another trade beforehand to clear cap space for the Rangers, but it's all just a mess when you really think about the trade.

I can imagine the Rangers have kicked the tires about Richards, but I just can't see this being a hot rumor because it makes no sense for Dallas, and is a difficult trade to pull off for the Rangers

we have 8 mil worth of cap space to burn?
considering our "star" player is about as medically reliable as an 82 ford escort, strapping ourselves with another rediculous contract is the last thing we need to do.
To take on another 7 mil plus contract for another guy who cant seem to play an entire season is just pure stupidity, but i guess look who we're dealing with here.

If this is even being discussed sather really needs to be put out to pasture...really.

ugh can the season just start already before he does something else to set this team back for the next 5 years (as if he hasnt done enough already)

I say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to bringing in Richards. If Sather trades Dubinsky for Richards, I will be really pissed off. It will further prove that every step Sather takes forward, he then takes two steps back.

First, let me say that I actually really like Brad Richards as a player.

Secondly, let me say that trading Dubi ++ for him would be one of the most bone-headed moves this franchise has made in quite some time - which is really saying something. I could be convinced if Heatley, who requires an elite playmaker to set up his shot, was the goal scorer we acquired. But Marian Gaborik DOES NOT need an elite playmaker to put up points. He needs players who can keep up with him - see Wes Walz - and I think Dubi could fill that role perfectly. Give the kid a shot before moving significant assets to get another 7+ million dollar player.

Praying that this is just a bad rumor that some writer dregded up on his own. I actually don't just dislike this potential deal, I f`in despise it!!!!

I see Dubi as part of the core of this Rangers club. He and Cally are the two players here that you can count on night after night to give 100% every shift. Makes it even better when you factor in they came up through the organization.

If Dubi is out, you lose your only true physical presence in the Rangers top 6. Yeah maybe Cally is still a physical player, but Cally is what 5'11" being generous? I would have to see this move happen, as I just don't see Brad Richards as the type of player who has the moxy to lead the NY as thier top line center. Don['t think he can carry that load here. Maybe in Dallas he can...But this isn't Dallas and this guy takes one or two shifts off and I could totally see the Garden crowd getting on his arse.

Please say no to this one Glen...PLEASE!!!!!

Shedding Rozsival's contract would make us weaker defensively.
Shedding Redden's contract would be a master stroke.

You have 8 million in cap space but still have to round out your roster with 2-3 d-spots and 3-4 forwards that would eat into the cap-space not to mention having cap-space left over for injuries.

The only way the Rangers deal for Richards is if they can trade Drury in return (or Redden) and i don't see that happening.

Agreed, or maybe Anisimov eventually.

And it's only 2 years of Richards.

Does anyone seriouly think we have a shot at the Stanley Cup in the next two years?

We've got some nice young assets and prospects.
How about some patience?

Yes for this year. We have to think past one year. Dealing one of these nightmare commitments and then signing Boullion for one year would give us 2 rookies in our top 6 that get to play, learn and grow together in a year where we are not winning any cup anyway.

Brad Richards is a Conn Smythe trophy winner. I dont think moxy is a problem....his contract on the other hand........

This rumor wont die because he is the prototypical (and I hate this term) "Tort's Guy." I hope and pray that hack writers have latched onto their previous relationship in Tampa, and that its not really Tort's attempting to pull the strings on a Richards acquisition.

I imagine if the Rangers traded for Richards, they'd try to keep him around for longer than just 2 years (depending on his performance)

This is exactly what is happening. What do you think, the Rangers are just waiting for that perfect time to sign Dubi? Yea right!

Dubi's pissed them off enough to include him in a trade. Dubi to Dallas for Richards is on the table, but the Rangers want to clear enough salary to take him back and Dallas does not want to take Redden or Rozsival back.

That's the reason this is taking so long...Sather's trying to find a team willing to take on one of those guys,

We have a superstar goaltender, a superstar forward up front, and a budding star shutdown defenseman. I would never go out and say "the Rangers will win the Stanley Cup in the next couple of years," but I have been watching hockey long enough to know that anything can happen with that combination of players.

As overpaid as those guys are (Redden/Rosivhal) i can't imagine what the Rangers would do without them. Your D would be too inexperienced...
