Detroit drafted him in 2006, they had signed him and he spent all year with Grand Rapids in the AHL.
He had a bit of a rough transition to pro hockey. His offensive totals were modest because he was mostly an even strength player on the bottom pairing when he's a pretty strong powerplay guy. By the end of the year he was in and out of the lineup and Brian Lashoff (a player two years younger just on a tryout) had pretty much jumped him on the depth chart and Pyett was battling with guys on AHL contracts.
This year, Detroit has the top 4 in Grand Rapids pretty well set with Jakub Kindl, Doug Janik, Andy Delmore, and Sergei Kolosov. Pyett will compete for ice time with two other smaller, young defensemen in Sebastien Piche and Travis Ehrhardt. Ideally with a year of pro experience under his belt he'll come out ahead, but he'll definitely need to bounce back to stay on Detroit's radar going forward.
