Rangers Prospect #27

After a tremendous season in Hartford, which followed a very good season the year before in Idaho (ECHL), who was acquired as a free agent 2 years ago is on our list. Let's hope he can show the same improvement in the next two years as he did in the last, so that he'll be a good NHLer.

Owens has proven to be a pretty good AHL player. He is still young and one of the fastest players in our organization. He's also got a gritty game. He comes to play. Add Soryal.

Owens has that NHL contract, which leaves buzzing in the back of my head whether he might be the 4th line winger instead of Byers.

I'll go with him.

I went with Jordan Owens because he has established himself as a top-6 AHLer. He scored better than 0.5 ppg, has excellent speed, decent size and can hit.

I'll go off the beaten path for a player to be added: Vlad Denisov. Very tough defenseman who deserves to be ranked among the "Projects & Suspects". Sure he's not a blue-chipper, but he's definitely a project.

I just noticed that all 7 of our 2008 draft picks are in our top 25.

I believe he signed elsewhere this past July.

I voted Horak - to answer those who wonder why he's getting love from me and others, he was the 30th ranked European skater in this past draft (I know, I know, central scouting is suspect, but that's still good). He slipped, because although he's got a ton of offensive upside and speed, he has as many questions about his work ethic and defense. As HF describes him:

Quote:
Horak has a lot of offensive skill and breakaway speed, but the rest of his game needs work. He doesn't put in much effort when he doesn't have the puck.
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/roman_horak

Typical "he's got the skills, but we're not sure he 'gets it'" player, right? Then, immediately after the draft, he indicates that he wants to come over to the CHL and the team that Sather controls, the WHL Chilliwack Bruins, used the 8th overall pick in the import draft to select him. Sounds an awful lot like maybe he does "get it" after all - or is at least trying to.

Good signs to go with a good skillset = in the project section for me.

Add Stajcer.

Owens signed a two way with the Rangers back in May.

Denisov was UFA, and as far as I know, won't be coming back to the organization. He was benched and asked for a trade in January, and clashed with Ken Gernander. Also, a while back he was offered a contract with Dynamo Minsk. Never heard if he signed with them or not, but it's pretty much a sure thing he's not going to be with us. At any event, he's not currently our property.

I was talking about Denisov (hence the highlight). Very sneaky of you to put Jordan Owens in the quote, 'cause I didn't write that...

Oh, and Zaborsky again

Miika Wiikman really needs to be added to the list. He's 24 and very talented. Last season in Hartford was obviously disappointing, but there's still plenty there to like.

Sorry, I thought you were referring to Owens. So then Wiikman should be there. He has one more shot this year to prove himself or solidify his role as a no-name minor leaguer.

I don't get how Owens and Zabo are tied. Jordan Owens is one step away from the NHL. Zabo had a mere half a season as a good ECHLer. He isn't even an established AHLer. He'll probably become that this year, but come on, he shouldn't be ahead of Owens.

Owens can play a few games for the Rangers this year, and has the potential to be a very good third liner. I definitely think he should be ahead of Zabo.

Cool, then keep voting for him.

It's all about upside for me. I think Zaborsky has more. And I'm a big fan of Owens--I kept requesting he be added the last time around until someone correctly pointed out that we didn't have his rights at that time.

I mean I could sit and argue that it's silly for Ryan Bourque, who has not even played Junior hockey, to be ahead of Carl Hagelin who looks like a sure-fire third liner. Or that it's silly for Michael Sauer, who had an excellent season in the AHL and who didn't look at all out of place in his brief cup of coffee, to be ranked behind Matt Gilroy. But everyone has their take on each prospect, and everyone has their dark horse. Some people really like Zaborsky, myself included.

Owens... not much upside, but seems tailor made as a hard working, checking forward ala Ortmeyer.

Add Soryal... has Darren Langdon type smart fighting skills & has shown some improvement in his game.

See, and that's why I think that Horak, Dowzak and Campbell (my current next three) should be ahead of Owens, Zaba and Zaborsky. Obviously everyone at this stage is still a big risk, but I see Horak, Dowzak and Campbell as a 20% chance at 2nd line or 2nd pairing, whereas Owens and Zaba are 20% at 4th line/career backup and Zaborsky is 20% 3rd liner/1% 2nd liner.

I obviously hope that all of them progress to exceed my expectations, but when it comes to voting, that's why I have them where I do.

Soryal would be 30th for me - he projects as a legit fourth liner with real fighting skills (which puts him over Owens in my book).

Soryal reminds me as well of Langdon.

Anyway to Owens--he has speed, grit, will drop gloves, score the odd goal, his speed and good defensive instincts make him an excellent pk'er right now at the AHL level--he's not going to have a problem keeping up at the NHL level. One area he may lack is on strength issues. He's got a bit of Callahan in him though.

Looks like both Owens and Zabo will get in on the top 30 list. I just hope Campbell takes one of the last two spots.
