If Frolik is a 60-70 pt. scorer by the end of his ELC, then he'll probably get 4-5M on his next deal. If Repik is a 20 goal scorer by the end of his deal, he probably gets around 3M. If Kulikov plays the way I think he can, he probably gets 3M. If Markstrom is a star by the end of his contract, he probably gets 3-4M. etc. etc. Of course, not all our prospects are going to pan out, but hopefully most of them will, and I don't think it's unsound to plan for the worst. If our prospects turn out like we hope they will, then we'll have an expensive team and it will only get more expensive if we try to keep everyone together. I'd rather hold onto Horton and let the chips fall where they may, but like I said I don't think it's unsound to plan for the worst either.
Basically, I agree.
1. If our young players produce so well as to earn big bucks, that will be a good problem to have.
2. Let's keep Horton around until #1 happens. Even crappy insurance is better than no insurance.

MR, that is a good problem to have. It would mean we are not only in the playoffs, but contending. Let's worry about this issue when it actually gets closer to fruition though. One step at a time, man.

Like I said, I agree with this. But I'm willing to see it from other POV's as well. All I'm saying is I think it's a valid point and something management may be considering. Maybe they feel like Horton is not going to grow much more and he's not part of the long term solution here, so they may want to trade him for a package that helps us out more this season, and maybe also in the future. And you get Stafford for around half the price of Horton for the next few years, possibly.

True--but it seemed to me that, so much of last year, he tended to take forever to get that wrist shot of his off. I've always felt he did that to get a high percentage shot off, so I cut him some slack, hoping that he'd think about it during the off-season and work on being that little bit faster.

On the pro side, the two single most impressive things I saw last year were Horton scoring TWICE from totally impossible angles. Remember those? He was parked to the side, it may very well have been on a PP, the puck came to him and he somehow put it in. That still has me shaking my head.

But...he can appear so unmotivated at times.

That said, keep him. You don't make this trade, even to save money. Here's hoping he's learned a few things between seasons. I, personally, think you're going to see a much better Horton now that he's back at his natural position again and will have someone feeding him pucks. There's a reason these guys clicked a while back, and no reason to expect that they won't do so again.

True, poor Ryno was all lost. Pretty nice moves by Stafford all in all.
