During the off season, before being replaced, Jackson said Dallas would consider adding a player (I believe he specifically mentioned defense) via trade when teams were dumping salary to become compliant with the cap or even a situation like the Dan Boyle traded last summer.
While Jackson is not running the show anymore, this is still a logical move for the team. Plus, Jackson is still assisting Nieuwendyk.
While our salary predictions are definitely going to change based on performance during the season, they give us an idea about how much salary Dallas can add this year (assuming the player is on a multi-year deal) without jeopardizing the re-signing of a key member of the team.
The most difficult thing to predict though is the goalie situation which is why I avoided it. So many variables will affect Dallas’ goalies in 2010 that it was truly worthless to try and predict at this point.
Dallas Stars’ Salary Cap Information
Team Cap Hit:
Based on a $52.5 million cap, Dallas would have about $8 million to fill out the roster, solve the goalie situation, and add a player to improve the defense or some other aspect of the team.
Of course, this is assuming Hicks sells the Rangers or solves is cash flow issues which would allow Dallas to spend to the cap again.
Pretty soon, teams are going to have to scramble to get under the cap or even give themselves some wiggle room for injuries during the season. Hopefully, Dallas will have the support of the owner to capitalize on this situation.
Bad news for the Stars if they are looking for financial relief. Tom Hicks is considering keeping the Rangers, even though I don't see how that is possible.
So you almost feel bad for him, after weathering all of that ugly, that now, when his team finally looks to have a real-deal chance for playoffs and long-term sustainability, he has to sell. Does he ever want to go to his accountant and say, "Is there any way for me keep the team?"
"There is a way, and I’m working on that," Hicks said Sunday. "So we’ll see."
Does he still own part of Liverpool? From what I remember, the fans there never really warmed up to him or Gillette, I don't see why he doesn't sell off his shares if he hasn't already. Some rich Arabic oil baron would pick up the team no problem.
