I think Yelle, if he wants to, will wear 11 this coming year and Boychuck will get it in the 2010-2011 season after Yelle's contract is up.

I love this signing. I know we had a thread a while back talking about filling this hole, and I really liked the idea of Yelle if we could get him for a fair price and JR has come through once again. With all the props for JR's work this offseason, I think Aaron Ward deserves a shout out for helping to bring in Alberts and Yelle. Now if JR could just work his magic and bring in 1 more Bruin in Kobasew....(I know this won't happen, just saying )

Yeah..I kind of agree with what you are saying. Canes still do hold the cards, but I think when you publicly state that you are not re-signing someone and again publicly state that there has been little interest from teams, it lessens the chance of getting a decent return.

Who knows though. I guess I shouldn't judge him on this until the final verdict is in.

I think that one waits until NEXT offseason at this point.

Seriously, I like the look of this team right now and if we can get just one more piece at the trade deadline (legit top line playmaking winger) then we're well capable of shocking some people.

I won't say that we would beat the Penguins (since they're the team to beat in the East this year) in a series with this lineup, but I think we'd do a hell of a lot better against them with this group then we did with last years playoffs. And this IS a group that would be sound enough defensively to pull the upset unlike last years group.

Our team is set, so the first liner hopes we have will be dealt with next year. If Frolov becomes a free agent on July 1st, I'd bet he is a Cane come July 2nd.

Our team went through a nice change this offseason, our D got bigger and tougher as did our 4th line all with keeping our top 9 forwards together. Very nice work by JR, I can't wait until we drop the puck October 2nd.

If Frolov becomes a free agent on July 1st, I bet someone else offers him more than we can afford and he signs elsewhere.

As much as I'd love Frolov, I don't see it happening. He's going to garner so much interest around the league and we'll be outbid. Going after big-name free agents isn't really our thing. Sure, Frolov isn't a huge star but he's young enough and talented enough that he could get there and someone will pay him based on the untapped potential he still has.

luv our offseason--hope brindy is going to be closer to 100%--JR could still make a trade out of the blue here though--ready for the puck to drop

Wow, good news! I wanted him but never thought we'd actually sign him, especially for so cheap. Welcome Yelle!

Not to turn this into another Babchuk thread, but I think there is a big distinction to be made over not re-signing someone because of their play or because of their contract demands. At one point, the Canes said Babchuk would play in the top 4 if he returned. There were several teams in trade discussions but interest seems to have waned because of asking price - the Canes or Babchuk's.

Back to the roster and upcoming season though. For me, the pluses are more size, physical play and grit among the forwards even if it is in the bottom 6, a more physical D corps which should help Cam Ward continue his ascending play with a more responsible D in front of him down low, and better overall PK.

The minuses or questions are a slower D corp with outlet passing that won't be as good given the departures, a PP that has been weakened on the point, and lack of proven point production consistency over the course of the year among the top 9 forwards outside of Staal and Whitney. Several question marks where previously you knew, barring injuries, you could count on consistent scoring from 4-5 guys. All in all though, much to be optimistic about.

If we're contenders at the deadline it would be great to add a winger for a Cup run.

Anyone know who will likely be available?

Good find. I was looking yesterday but didn't see him on the site yet. Ward will wear number 4 again and Alberts 41.

So, we have an actual fourth line center....to center the fourth line?! What?!?!?!

Based on our experiences since 2006, I would have thought that the #4C position itself would be filled by either
(A) a winger
(B) a powerplay/shootout specialist who absolutely sucks at playing hockey
(C) an underweight 19 year-old rookie who can barely win even a third of his face-offs

Color me disappointed.
