The powerplay obviously needs to improve this year. I think Ryan Smyth could be a huge help in front of the net. How do you see the powerplay units shaping up for this season? Who the hell is going to be the 2nd defender on our 2nd pp unit?
My take.
Smyth - Kopitar - Brown
Stoll - Doughty
Frolov - Handzus - Williams
Johnson - ? (i guess whoever is our 6th dman? maybe Hickey)
I thought about having Fro play on the 1st pp unit instead of Brown, but I like the chemistry between Fro and Zus. I assume Smyth and Zus will be in front of the net on their respective lines.
Smyth/Williams on either side of the net, Kopitar above the right half-board, Kopitar/Doughty are the primary puckmovers/setup guys
Frolov - Handzus - Brown
Johnson - Hickey
Handzus/Brown on either side of the net, Frolov above the left half-board, Frolov is the primary puckmover either going down low/to the front or to Johnson for point shot/rebounds
Smyth/Williams on either side of the net, Kopitar above the right half-board, Kopitar/Doughty are the primary puckmovers/setup guys

to be honest, i think doughty may play the entirety of the 2:00. i think its way too early to pencil in hickey on the second unit for the start of the season, though i'm not saying its not possible.

That is why i assume he will get PP time in the beginning. And who else to sacrifice ??? Frolov??? Brown?? Williams ???

indeed i would put Hickey on if he makes the team but a little bit shuffled.

I think you have to have Smyth in front of the net on that first PP unit. I think the only question would be who is the other forward out there. I think Kopi and Smyth are locks.

Smyth is a monster in front of the net. You have to have him on the PP. Purcell really has to shine in training camp to get PP time and 1st or 2nd line time. I cheer for the kid, but he has a tough road ahead of him.

2nd PP Unit
Frolov - Purcell - Brown
Stoll - Scuderi/Greene
Stoll would take the faceoff and then move to the point. I would like a defensive d-man out there with Stoll on the point. Handzus can replace Purcell if he doesn't make the team.
It's a huge factor. Putting two forwards on the point for the powerplay is just dumb.
i dont necessarily agree with 5 forwards on the PP but there were plenty of teams that did it, i think it was mainly during 5 on 3's and towards the end of the game where the PP team was trailing.
I'll have to agree with everyone else in saying having no defenseman on a PP line is unwise. However, using Williams on the point isn't an awful idea at all.

If Hickey does play, he can be rotated in slowly. Moller could also replace Purcell come mid-season if he isn't producing there.
