Canucks Officially Sign Mathieu Schneider

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/...cks_schneider/

Schneider would be a solid pickup as a bottom pairing puck mover that can QB the PP. I'd be happy with the move.

...

The deal is now official!

Theres the news I've been waiting for all summer. I just hope this doesn't mean that Sundin has decided to retire.

edit: Dan Murphy....

Perfect length would be 2 years. Gives Sauve, Andersson, Ellington, Connauton and Price time to develop.

Damn. About time.

Gonna echo some people sentiments though, hopefully it's cheap, and hopefully (although it's a very slim chance...) this doesn't mean the end of Mats.

Edit: LOL...Dan Murphy. I think Eklund has finally come out of the closet...

Good stop-gap solution. Can play 20 minutes a game and man the point on the power play. Right on!

You forgot the two biggest names: Edler and Oberg. However, I doubt he has 2 years left in the tank.

I rather the canucks to trade for a younger defenseman rather than going for someone who is close to retire.

If Schneider can play anywhere near the level he did when he went to Montreal I'm INCREDIBLY excited. I hope to hell this is true. He so fits on our defense.

trading will force us to give up assets. Schneider does not require any assets to acquire. This is what we need, and he can mentor guys like Edler, Bieska, on top of that, take ice time away from our defenders (in a good way type of take ice time away).

Well, yeah, obviously someone like Niskanen would be much, much better, but those types of guys are either not on the market, or would cost astronomical prices; think Hodgson +...

It's still likely the canucks will bring in a young defenseman to challange for SOB's spot. Nashville seems like a very good trading partner in this regard with either Franson or Klein.

That's a pretty solid idea actually. Bring in Schneider for a year, and trade for an offensive defenseman prospect around a year away on the development curve.

Oberg I forgot. Edler is already a top 4 NHL defenseman...

Sundin is so done in Vancouver anyways.

Anyways this could be a good signing, I'd worry about injuries and his age.

I'm in the "happy to hear this rumour" camp. Is Schneider a key piece to our team's future core? Obviously not, the guy's gonna retire any time now. But the thing is, he's proven that he's still very effective on the PP and that's really all this team needs right now; a PP quarterback. Our top 4 of Mitchell, Salo, Bieksa, and Edler can all play defense. It's the puck moving skills the Canucks lack and Schneider will provide that until one of the organization's D prospects is ready to step up or until Edler proves he's the #1 guy.

He's a stop gap folks, nothing more. He's essentially playing the same role that Sundin played, except at a different position.

If he's as inept defensively as people suggest then just put him on the 3rd pairing with O'Brien and have Bieksa play with Edler on the top pairing:

Bieksa-Edler
Mitchell-Salo
O'Brien-Schneider

Looks good to me.

Don't like this move. Too old. We still have Cory Schneider to trade assuming we get Luongo locked up.

...The dude scored 17 points in 23 games with Montreal last year. If you watched ANY Habs action after he got there he was THE key on that power play...More than Markov...More than Kovalev.

On a 1 year deal he's EXACTLY what our PP needs. If this is indeed true this team is now set up very nicely for another run at the division and another try at the playoffs.

Out:

Ohlund
Pyatt
Labarbera
Sanford
Sundin

In:

Hodgson
Samuelsson
Schneider
Raycroft

We upgraded our point production from the back end. Added some Stanley cup experience with both Schneider and Samuelsson (if this signing happens), and Samuelsson and Hodgson together should at least replace the offense gone with Pyatt and Sundin.

His age is only a concern if he's used incorrectly. I think he can still be damn effective at what he brings to the table with limited TOI.

He's pretty old and not that effective even strength. however, he's gold on the PP. This is a win/lose situation.

Signing Schneider at a reasonable cost would be a good move. Sure he is old and will have ups and downs, possibly even be completely washed up, but give it a shot. For those saying another trade has to be made, well try this first, it doesn't necessarily prevent another trade from happening. We should expect 1-2 dmen to go down with longish injuries (and of course we expect salo will only play his 60 games)

I was impressed with how well he did in Montreal.

Why? Our defense is deep enough so Schneider will have to play 4th or 5th D minutes at most. Pair him with someone steady like Salo and it could be a great pairing. Schneider is a better puck mover than anyone we have right now.
