And I know Gagne was atrocious...but last I checked, they won the World Series anyways. I'd take Wagner putting up a triple-digit ERA if the Sox win the whole damn thing.

I just don't see the need. It's not like they're blowing quality starts game after game.
Bard: 3.65 ERA
Delcarmen: 3.47 ERA
Okajima: 2.77 ERA
Papelbon: 2.08 ERA
Ramirez: 2.67 ERA
Saito: 2.86 ERA
Daniel Bard is their worst reliever right now. I can think of 25+ teams who would love to be able to say that.
Plus, they're going to have Beckett, Lester, Buchholz, Wakefield, Tazawa, and Penny by the end of the week which means someone might see bullpen duty and push out Gonzalez, (not to mention Matsuzaka possibly making a comeback).
Is that worth the money or the trade? Maybe Theo is banking on Minaya giving him up because they're cash-strapped and he walks from the Sox as a Type A free agent?
wow the sox needed that win last night, Beckett needs to be pitching alot better was leaving alot of balls up in the zone he was bad against the Jayst last start they need him to be much much better!
Guy was great in 2005 and 2006 but is finished as a MLB starter.
His #@( better be designated for assignment or outright released because he put the final nail in our coffin for the year.
We will be 3 1/2 games out of division race after tonight , Have a difficult schedule and Peavy wont be ready till early September.
This White Sox team has no heart and has already given up on the year.
Sub par offense , horrendous defense , up and down pitching and an idiot hitting coach that cant seem to get fired no matter how horrible the team hits over last few years.
I am just so depressed because this team has given away 10 games this year at least thru bad defense.
At least the Bears actually will have a QB for 1st time in a dozen years. Seriously the 2 best QB's Bears have ever had were Erik Kramer and Sid Luckman.
Wagner refuses trade to Boston, which I guess means that they told him they weren't going to let him walk. Should have known after hearing about him here in Philly. The guy is all about money. I guess that year off he had, he didn't pay attention about how the free agent market works now.

If he was about money he would have went to Boston and gladly accepted the gross overpayment of 8 mil for next year.

He wants to close, even if it's at 4-5 mil.
Yeah his contract for next year is pretty nice. I'd imagine this means Minaya will buy out the last year of his contract for $1M rather than pay him $8M. If that wasn't the situation, it wouldn't matter what the Sox do since Minaya was going to keep him anyway.
Also, there's a report from WEEI that another team (supposedly in the postseason hunt) claimed Penny off waivers earlier this month but the Sox pulled him back. Hindsight is 20-20.
1:34 p.m. update:
A major league source told the Globe's Nick Cafardo that the Red Sox and Mets are on the verge of completing a trade that would send two mid-range minor leaguers to New York and land reliever Billy Wagner in Boston. A source told Tony Massarotti that the Red Sox will not pick up Wagner's $8 million option for 2010 but will retain the right to offer Wagner arbitration, meaning they would get two compensatory draft picks.

I figured he wanted another long-term deal where he'll get a ton of money.
No matter, he's been traded to the Sox finally. He can just not accept arbitration. I say that works out fine. Now, who is the odd man out in the bullpen? Is Penny waived?
Wagner trade is agreed to in principle. Theo must really have wanted him. He's good against lefties but it's not like he's bad against righties. Of course, the big question is his health and rehab status.
On a side note, this is the time of year when I really don't like the way the Sox operate, throwing around millions to get relatively small pieces. I know it helps them stock up, but it reminds me a little bit of the way the Yankees operate.

For right now, it's going to be Gonzalez. When Wakefield is activated tomorrow, another head will roll unless someone gets hurt or otherwise needs a DL trip for "anxiety."
Not sure how the MLB operates, but since Penny was waived and pulled back can he be waived again?

the buyout will be exercised however Theo retains the right to salary arbitration, it's a waiver claim, not a trade per se since it's unknown who goes to the Mets
