I made a post on the T&R forum asking about Franson. My guess is that something involving Michael Grabner would get their attention. They could use a pure goal scorer on the verge of making the NHL ever since Radulov took off.
Interesting fact....we didn't have a 3rd round selection that year (not saying we would've used it to select Franson in any case) because it was dealt in order to obtain a 3rd round pick in 2004. That pick was used to select Edler. Still a very good move by Nonis to get that pick. We deal our original 2004 3rd rounder for Geoff Sanderson at the trading deadline (thank you Brian Burke).
There is a guy over on the main board saying Sportsnet Pacific said on their 10:30pm show that they are hearing he signed for 1 year at $1.5 million. Anyone watching that show see anything?
At this point he's an upgrade, although slight one over Ohlund defensively...
I like the signing and he'll be an upgrade offensively, but he simply is not an upgrade on Mattias Ohlund defensively. Not even close.
I'm frankly astonished at how greatly Ohlund's performance here last season is under-rated by most people. I guess it's the 'Murzyn Effect' where if you look slow once in a while you're deemed to be a garbage defender no matter how strong you are in the many other aspects involved in playing quality defense.
Edit - if indeed Schneider signed for $1.5 million that's a pretty nice deal.
I don't get this thinking. While it may be unlikely Sundin comes back, Gillman said cap space wasn't really a concern for re-signing Sundin.
It's the Vancouver Province newspaper, that's the thinking lol. Who knows what they have in mind if Sundin returns. I do think that time is running out on that and they will know by the end of this week weather he is coming back or not. Apparently JP Berry is over there, so I wouldn't expect Gillis to wait around again. Let's be running out of the gates and keep running to the cup. No distractions, hence wanting to get the Lu contract done before the season.

I think Ohlund is a much better defensive defenseman than Schneider, but the team will likely spend less time in their own zone with Schneider on the ice than they would with Ohlund.
like mentioned, we're still very much the opposite of fleet of foot on the back end if Schneider is added. he brings plenty to the table, and he would be a nice slight improvement over Ohlund, but Ohund's roster spot is where I really saw an opening to improve our overall quickness on defence. that would be the only thing I would be disappointed about if he signed.
and if he does, I agree Gillis needs to make a trade for a #7 with quick feet. Someone to platoon with SOB on the 3rd pairing depending on match-up. Krajicek is one name that keeps coming up who should be cheap to pick up who I'd be okay with. I'd prefer a young on-the-cusper, but if another team drives the price too high for prospect's A, B, and C, then Krajicek for a mid-round pick would be a good depth acquisition. I always thought the comparisons to Hedican were apt, and felt he played an underrated positional game defensively.
Mitchell-Salo
Edler-Bieksa
Schneider-SOB/Krajicek
solid, but not over-whelming. but you don't need over-whelming from your D if you get it from your goaltending.
for PP I put both Schneider and Salo with the twins. Two big shots facing Henrik on the side-wall.
Samuelson-Henrik-Daniel
Salo-Schnieder
then 2nd unit you've still got Edler's big bomb paired with a 40 point RHer.
Bernier-Kesler-Demitra
Bieksa-Edler
PP should make up for some of the goals against due to our lack of foot speed on the blueline.
bottom line, no question we're a better team with Schneider on it than off it.
Hate to work off speculation but Schneider at 1.5 makes sense at this point.
Doubt that he was Gillis's first consideration but right now Schnieder is one of the few options out there.
Agree MS that he will not replace Ohlund and Ohlund's ability has been too seriously down-graded by many. He still is a good candidate for the Swedish Olympic team.
However, Schneider, if healthy and if anything is left in the tank, is certainly the best pp qb on the team and probably the best passer on the defense. Will have to be closely watched in terms of match-ups.
Who knows - might end up being two Schneiders on the team
Samuelsson, and now Schneider added to the PP. Excellent. I wasn't a fan of the Samuelsson contract, but if the reported Schneider contract is true, Gillis has earned my forgiveness.
Ohlund hurt his eye in 1998. He's played with it his entire career and been a substantially above-average NHL defender.
Was going to say the same thing. And sad that it appears Pauser's constant nattering finally wore down some people to the point where they reflect on Ohlund's last year as a below average contributor.
I'm in total agreement. But where can we find such a defenceman?
The same place Dave Nonis finds a top 6 forward?
But in semi-seriousness, it would be a double standard to not hold Gillis accountable for a pressing need he identified before last season (a puck moving defenseman). I still think he has something in the works for an upgrade.

heh. Dave Nonis STILL can't find a top six forward for his team, and he needs about six of them.
A puck mover is on the wish list, for sure, but the Canucks still have an above average offensively talented back end even if they don't add one. It's a far cry from the sad state of the Canucks top six a couple of seasons ago.

Yep. Edler, Salo, Bieksa, and Schneider are all capable of 40+ point seasons. It won't happen for Salo because he's injury prone and I'm not sure about Schneider, but all 4 of those guys are 40 point defensemen over 82 games.
