Kyle Mclaren for a Training Camp Invite

I've been saying this for a while and I want to know what all of you think. The Rangers have two spots open on defense, one of which I would like to see go to a rookie and the other to a guy like Seidenberg or Bouillion if they can be signed. But if those options aren't possible, how about a training camp invite for Kyle McLaren?

He hasn't been in the best of shape of late (which is why I suggest an invite and not an actual contract) but when he is healthy he is one of the hardest checkers in the league, something the Rangers sorely lack. He could probably be had for league minimum or at least under a million dollars so I think a training camp invite couldn't hurt.

I know people will be yelling about "playing the kids" but this team could really use some physicality on the back line, something we haven't really had since way before the lockout.

I would love to see some physicality added (Bouillion, please) but IMO McLaren is not the answer (try out or not). The guy just can't keep up in the new NHL, let alone under Torts. Sad because he used to be one of my favorite Dmen, especially during his Bruin years.

I think there are 2 issues with Kyle McLaren

1. He has knee issues. With the right care its manageable but should be noted.

2. I don't know what Kyle's expectations are at this point in his career, but I think he outplayed his usefulness in San Jose and wanted a bigger contract. That wasn't happening so they parted ways.

The Sharks have a history of letting their defensive blueliners go. I for one am still somewhat shocked they let Scott Hannan leave town. That guy was a heck of a player for the teal.

a year in the A might be all the rehab he needed and is ready to play in the NHL again, but at what cost ?

assuming he comes to camp and impresses can NY really afford the cap hit to sign him ?

and doesn't he block a Sauer or Potter from making the club ?

if he would accept a 7th Dman role or more importantly a AHL contract then fine, why not?

Thing is Bouillon and Seidenberg are still out their and they should sign for less as they get desperate for the start of the year

Hannan leaving was due to him and Ron Wilson not seeing eye to eye/getting along too well. What they saw in terms of their youth or possible trades at the time probably also factored in. But I know that R. Wilson & Hannan were not on the best of terms.

yeah I knew that plus Hannan's expected contract demands and the development of Vlasic made the "non" signing possible.

Hannan was my favorite Shark and perhaps always will be

I'd be willing to invite anyone who would consider a deal at or below 1 million. Heck it's just an invite, even Nedved was good for one of those.

Maybe Fleury can T/O on defense.

You invite a guy to camp to see if he can earn a contract during camp.

I'm all for a capable guy being part of the third pair. If that guy is McLaren, so be it. Don't count on him for 82 games, so the Rangers better have a back-up plan.

Many defensemen are still available besides McLaren. Most of them are not going to get guaranteed NHL contracts so a tryout contract will be their best options.

Mathieu Schneider-rumored to headed to Vancouver where his former agent is the GM
Greg de Vries
Frantisek Kaberle
Francois Bouillon
Martin Skoula-you would think he is going to Jersey to re-join Lemaire. Skouls
Mathieu Dandeneault
MA Bergeron
Patrice Brisebois
Dennis Seidenberg
Steve Eminger
Chris Chelios
Alexei Semenov

It's a buyers market.

Regarding McLaren, his agent Neil Abbott said a few weeks ago that he was speaking with 3 teams. Money is not an issue. McLaren just wants a chance to play. FYI,Doug Messier used to represent McLaren. LA is the likely destination for McLaren because Dean Lombardi had him in SJ.

I've said it in other threads, anyone know where Bryan Berard is playing these days? Not sure if the bridges were burned with him when he was here, but he's another guy to add to that list of players that may be available on a tryout basis. I'm all for a veteran to come in on a tryout basis on defense and push the rookies. I'd be cool with more than one coming in on defense.
