I dunno why people are making that point. The Canucks have a ton of playmakers, and at least 4-5 guys who can play the point on the PP - what we lacked last year was shooters (especially when Salo was injured) outside of Edler.

Since the reported price tag is so low, is it that big of a deal that he might only play 50-60 games?

As long as there aren't any major health problems that will keep him out for the entire season, a few nagging problems kind of go with the territory.

If you're doing a risk / benefit assessment, even with all the injuries, he's been averaging about 40 points a season since he was 35. He's clearly lost a step, but it's not like every player in the league is a Patrick Kane. Defensively he should be more than adequate against most of the lines in the Western Conference. Indeed, his injury history might be due to being overplayed because he still is able to contribute far more than just on the PP.

The Canucks have the luxury of having 5 defenceman ahead of him on the depth chart. The last 3 teams which Schneider has played on did not have that.

Here's how I see the ice time break down:
Bieksa: 23 mins
Mitchell: 23 mins
Edler :23 mins
Salo: 20 mins
O'Brien: 17 mins
Schneider: 15 mins

I guess the disappointment is that the Canucks probably need someone who can take some of the shutdown role pressure off of Mitchell and Salo, and they won't get that with Schneider. But the likelihood of getting that was pretty minute anyhow...

Yup, many here are calling Bieksa a shooter as well. He does have a good shot, but it's a wrist shot, and he tends to use it when he's sneaking in off the point and converting a Sedin cross ice pass.

What the Canucks could use is a first pass guy to break out of the zone. That helps more 5-on-5 though.

Reportedly it's a one year deal worth around 1.5 million dollars

Awesome, but I still think that we could use another defenceman....if Salo goes down (which is quite possible) our defence looks a bit shaky.

Nope. But sadly, one Jay Bouwmeester immediately comes to mind.

...not that I mean to bring him up.

not exactly a shutdown guy (but not bad), and certainly not AV's favourite player, but any chance of bringing ossi back at the minimum as the 7th man? haven't heard much about his situation all summer.

Depends. If it is just a medical records review it can be fairly quick.

If he is going to be seeing a specialist or specialists and go through MRI's etc., it can be a little longer.

Habs are the living proof that a) you need at least 2, preferably 3 excellent PP dmen and b) Schneider is going to help Canucks PP - a lot.

I don't agree that Schneider is injury prone - I've followed his career for the past 20 years and he gets injuries here and there but usually not serious - not like Salo at all who gets injured and he's out 20 games.

Anyway, who cares if a 40 year old Dman on a 1.5M contract misses 15-20 games if he's healthy when it counts?

The determining factors are usually how relaxed you are and the size of the doctor's fingers.

I think with the unproven (unseen) talent Gillis has brought in (such as Rome). I bet he's hoping one of those players can fill in a 7th man spot nicely

I'd love to see Martin Skoula in a #7 role, but I don't think he'd want to be in that role.

When Salo is healthy hes going to to get more playing time than any other D-man on this team.

I care. What if he gets injured during playoffs?

Obviously given his age, the injury factor has to kick in. Remember, he's a year older than he was last season... it's definitely a risk you take when acquiring older players.

But like I said, if it's $1.5 million, then I'm not complaining too much... but this organization really has to get acquire some quality defensive prospects.

I don't think we have to worry about catastrophic injuries with Schneider. The fact he's played over 1200 games shows that he knows how to take care of himself.

He'll probably take some games off here and there when he tweaks an old injury and play about 70 games for us when it's all said and done. Some extra depth would be nice for when he needs to sit out but I think that is something Gillis will pick up sometime during the season.
