I like it. And it might answer a question I've had for years: would you be better off with a team comprised entirely of slightly above-average players, or a team with the whole range, from superstar to scrub?

You rarely get to see the former scenario in action, but I'd say that's what our D looks like now. O'Brien is the lone guy in our top 6 not making 3 million bucks!

Should be interesting.

Schnieder just signed today as per TEAM 1040... 3 new Dman today.

Over the cap by a few million now... we'll see what happens.

Way to go Vancouver,

Now Thornton is going to setting up Heatley and destroying the Western Conference.

Remember when a bunch of people on here freaked out on July 1st like the season had started already and the rosters were set?

Gillis said he'd make upgrades to the blueline and he's done it. And the season hasn't even started yet!

We will have to wait and see what the Schneider contract looks like - but there is going to have to be some shuffling.

Ehrhoff - $3.1 million this season and next -then UFA. Sportsnet report:
Quote:
Birthdate: July 6, 1982
Age: 27
Birthplace: Moers, West Germany
Height: 6'2
Weight: 205 lbs.
Shoots: Left
Salary: $2,750,000
NHL Seasons: 5
Drafted by San Jose in 2001 (4/106)

Assets
Owns sound hockey sense and the ability to log big minutes on the ice. Can quarterback a power play or be used in defensive situations.

Flaws
Doesn't handle big NHL forwards too well, so he needs to start making better use of his 6-2, 200-pound frame.

Career potential
Top four defenseman.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/p...stian_Ehrhoff/

Lukowich - $1,566,667 this season then UFA. His his recent injury report makes Salo look healthy by comparison. Sportsnet report:
Quote:
Birthdate: August 12, 1976
Age: 33
Birthplace: Cranbrook, British Columbia
Height: 6'1
Weight: 200 lbs.
Shoots: Left
Salary: $1,650,000
NHL Seasons: 11
Drafted by New York in 1994 (4/90)
Acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay in 2008.

Assets
Plays a smart, conservative game and doesn't take unnecessary chances. Possesses a good shot from the point.

Flaws
Doesn't play with enough toughness. Has struggled with various systems in recent years, as he's moved around a lot.

Career potential
Defensive defenseman.

You have the 10% cap overage for the off-season but it looks like some cap juggling will be needed for the regular season.

Maybe move Demitra?

Take that Burke.

15.5 million (including Schneider's rumored 1.5/year contract) in Free Agent defensemen salaries added.

I really think Bieksa is in consideration to help bring in a 2nd line center. We're too tight against the cap to afford Sundin, I think.

Edit: Of course, salary coming back is a consideration. There won't be many teams willing to part with young centers on ELCs or reasonable 2nd contracts for a 27 year old d-man.

I just realized that the Canucks are now in a position wherein trading to dump salary (e.g. Demitra + D-man) would return little value.

Anyone get the feeling that we had faxed Schneider a contract, and he would sign it upon passing his physical, but when he heard that we acquired 2 other defensemen he quickly signed his contract before having it taken away from him?

I think Lukowich is either being sent to the minors, or Demitra is gone. Either way I thought my eyes were decieving me when I saw the deal.

so how exactly does the team have cap space for all this?

if they also signed Schneider as well, and then would just waive Lukowich, they'd still be about a $1mill over the cap.

Moving Wellwood would barely clear the space, as you still have to replace that roster spot in the lineup... maybe Demitra will be on LTIR for a while... I can't see any other possibilites unless you're dealing Bieksa, but I don't think that helps our defense overall.

Yup, Gilman and Gillis, two experienced lawyers, would definitely do something like this.

Regular season? sure.
Playoffs? Nah don't think so.

Besides, Heatley's amazing playoff run was riding the coat tails of Daniel Alfredsson. Truth.

trade Lukowich for a 5-7th round pick. Bury Wellwood in the minors, go with Hodgson in his place. And Hansen at .550 as a 13th forward probably gets us there. Could also see what a package of Wellwood and Lukowich nets us in a trade.

I think we can assume that Lukowich is AHL bound.

If this is how much it costs to dump salary right now, what's next? Mike Gillis should offer Grabner to Detroit for Zetterberg to help that team get under the cap.

Haha you actually think Lukowich has value?

Salary dump, pure and simple.

Obviously a great trade for Vancouver.

Kinda curious what else Vancouver has planned. Just added 3 defensemen and are over the cap now. Went from being comfortably under the cap to quite a bit over now. Interesting stuff.
