Anyone get the feeling that we had faxed Schneider a contract, and he would sign it upon passing his physical, but when he heard that we acquired 2 other defensemen he quickly signed his contract before having it taken away from him?
Apparently Gillis said cap space is fine and doesn't need any more deals? Can anyone confirm? And if so, why is it the figures we see on here never seem to match reality?

Because there is "stuff" that always goes on behind the scenes.
For istance, Gillis said that the Canucks were complient with the Salary Cap. Yes they are. They don't have to get down under the Cap quite yet. Soon but not yet.
Also, there is the matter of Demitra's injury. He very well could be on IR at start of the season and thus provide us with extra cap room (I know that's not exactly how it works but I don't know how else to explain it easily).
Erhoff was the missing offensive defenseman that the Canucks needed. There's now absolutely no need for Schneider (other than Gillis giving him an opportunity to redeem his career) and I fully expect him to be the 7th defenseman.
Lukowich is the guy I expect to be traded or waived. He was the salary dump to come along with with Erhoff.
Salo, Edler, Bieksa, Mitchell, O'Brien and Erhoff will be the top six.
Schneider will be scratched and fill in for injuries (ie. Salo)
And just for laughs...moving Bieksa ($3.75) and Demitra ($4.00) along with one of Raymond, Hansen or Wellwood PLUS a first rounder....well...that would leave us enough room for Heatley.
Just saying.
I do that in a heartbeat

Lukowich won't be on the roster.
Well we know that Sami Salo will miss 1/4th of the season at least. So Schneider is a very very nice replacement.
Yeah, either Gillis has pictures of Bettman wearing women's underwear or the Canucks will have to do something to get under the cap by the end of training camp.

Waive Lukowich, Nycholat and Rome, and then either Hodgson goes back to junior (doubtful) or Wellwood gets waived. We don't need to make a trade to get down below the cap.
To answer my own question, Detroit, Philadelphia, Edmonton and Chicago arguably have more points in their defence. But all but Chicago are more expensive.
Assuming the Canucks hold on to O'Brien as the 7th d-man, they'll be about $20.3M on defense, which puts them 9th in the league.
Patrick White is the worst Canucks 1st rounder I have ever seen play. Even worse than Nathan Smith. He has no NHL-calibre skills and is barely able to play a noticable role on a NCAA team. I used to like him a lot and was very excited to watch him play when I went to see two MN Gophers games. He disappointed me in both - I should rather say, I was disappointed in that he played barely a few minutes in either game as the coach had him in a 4th line role.
I would've been thrilled to have even received a 3rd rounder for White as his value is that of a 5th. San Jose is definitely clearing cap space for a roster move. There is no rational reason they literally just threw away Erhoff and Lukowich for two career minor leaguers.

when I first saw this trade, and then the Schneider signing, my first thought was that they're in cap trouble and wondered how they'd get under...
but looking at the numbers again, and the options, it doesn't look hard to get under the cap. The biggest question mark is Demitra's status... if he starts the year on LTIR, it's not so bad.
At worst, I think Wellwood is waived... replaced by Hodgson (who's base salary is actually just short of $850K, IIRC). that would put the team just under the cap, with 13 forwards and 7 dmen.
but it's also very likely that they start the year with Demitra on LTIR... and with Salo and Schneider likely missing their share of games, it could create extra breathing room, with your #13 forward (Rypien/Hansen) and your #7 dmen (Schneider/O'Brien) getting a lot of games in.

Not bad!
And not one making over $3.75 million. None of those teams can claim that.

I figured you'd hate the trade, considering you think Ehrhoff is overrated
Another thing that's now worrisome, since we're so close to the cap taht means that there's no space for Luongo to extend his contract (unless the cap hit is the same).

It's sort of a "ying and yang" thing. Salo will miss 1/4th of the season and Schneider will miss 1/4 of the season. Hopefully not at the same time.

Lukowitch is off the books after this season. So is Demitra.
Sure Kesler is due a big raise but not more than what those two make.
