You tell me fans.
It has been said his contract is too high...ok, but really as useless as many think.

Dallas has no need for Jeff Finger, or his contract.

I guess that pretty much goes for the other 28 possible trade partners out there too. That contract will be with the Leafs until it expires.

Given that the Isles have no payroll room, and seven dmen under one-way deals (none of whom Finger is much of an upgrade over), I'd say that the chance of the Isles wanting him are zero.

I think Dallas has 7 or 8 d-men on a one-way contract right now.

Seriously, what is your reasoning? I mean, in what world did you arbitrarily decide that Dallas or NYI needed an overpaid Jeff Finger.

Witt, Gervais, Sutton, Martinek, Meyer, and Hillen.. Come on now, that's the kind of D that gets you Tavares.

He's not leaving Toronto until that contract expires (or if he's bought out)

Salary aside, Finger likely wouldn't even cut the Stars blueline.

I don't know why NYI or DAL were chosen, but I doubt either would want Finger.

Trading Finger means taking an equal salary dump in return in the form of a forward.

Therefore, I think the only teams that might considering taking Finger are WSH (Nylander), CBJ (Modin), FLA (Olesz), LAK (Handzus) or NJD (Zubrus), and even those teams are a stretch.

You're wrong here.

His contract aside, I think he's a very serviceable number 4-5 defenseman. And Dallas's blueline isn't so great that he wont fit in.

Dallas blueline has about 5/6 #3's and #4 defensemen. Finger wouldn't outbeat any of them.

Probably because they both have cap space, but what the OP doesn't realize is that both teams have financial issues that would preclude them from adding Finger's contract.

The opinion of Jeff Finger's contract is entirely from July 1st, 2008.

Finger earns his 3.5M a year, easily.

(All stats compared to other defenceman, forwards removed. Do note he missed 16 games so his rankings are potentially lower than they should be)

Ice time stats, to show he's doing better than the ice time would normally allow:

- 58th in ES TOI/G (17:14)
- 158th in PP TOI/G (0:46)
- 105th in PK TOI/G (2:27)
- 104th in Total TOI/G (20:27)

- 78th in points
- 30th in hits, even with the time missed
- 18th in blocked shots
- 49th in takeovers
- 111th in PIM (so he's not taking as many stupid penalties as people claim)

I think it shows that he's not as horrid as you make him out to be, now.

So why does Toronto want to trade him, is the question at hand.

Well, the issue is that the Leafs went money happy this deadline and sign Beauchemin and Komisarek. Not saying they're worse players, but that now leaves 5 defencemen who are arguably better than him (Kaberle, Beauchemin, Komisarek, Schenn, and another epically underrated D on here, Ian White).

So your #6 spot is a competition between Exelby, Van Ryn, and Finger, and nobody wants to pay 3.5M to a 3rd pairing D.

Finger's been forced into his situation by the Leafs defensive depth. Its not that he's overpaid, just that it would be stupid to keep him around on a stacked D for cap reasons.

I honestly rather have those guys than Finger. His salary is just crazy.

No one will want finger unless something of value goes with him.IMO

Deal with your teams mistakes and stop trying to think you can dump salary on the Isles.

In the end...Toronto got fingered in that contract

It isn't just about cap space, at least for the Isles. It is space. The Isles have seven dmen on one-ways. They can't add an eight without deleting one.

And, although I agree that Finger is a decent #5 dman, I don't see him as much of an upgrade for either team. So, there isn't much incentive to spend the money.

The funny aspect of that response is that we have no idea what an Islander defense composed of Sutton, Hillen, Martinek, and Meyer can do - since none of them were on the ice for the full season next year. And, I personally think it is a fantasy to expect Sutton and Martinek to remain in one piece this season as well.

A second observation is that Finger is hardly a guy who has shown he can improve a bad defense. Toronto had a horrendous defense last season.

And, a third comment is it really isn't important whether or not Finger is better or equal to Sutton et al. The Isles still don't have the payroll room or roster room. And, even if he is an upgrade, he is not a 3 million upgrade.

Finger isn't worth his salary, but the degree to which he's being overpaid is completely blown out of proportion by hf posters. Please look beyond points (which i know many of you use as the primary means of judgement for a player).

Leafs compared to the rest of the teams in STRICTLY defensive stats.

- 17th in Shots Allowed
- 13th in Total Hits
- 5th in Blocked Shots
- 14th in Takeovers

Now throw a goalie into it.

- 30th in Penalty Kill
- 30th in Goals Against (ES)
- 28th in Goals Against (4-4)
- 29th in Goals Against (PK)
- 30th in Goals Against (5-3 PK)
- 30th in Goals Against (Overall)
- 29th in Goals Against (Shootout)
- 28th in Save Percentage (Shootout)
- 44th out of 47 in Save Percentage (Toskala)

Its a good thing the NHL.com stats thing doesn't allow Cujo and Pogge onto their lists due to not enough games played, or I could go on and on.

The Leafs issue last year was having one of the worst goaltending lineups of the decade, period.
