Doug Wilson needs to grow a pair of balls and stop handing out such juicy contracts which are worth more than the player has earned. I'm glad Mitchell is signed and for a bit lower cap hit it would have been a good deal.

I just keep sensing that DW would rather be friendly with his players and overpay them just to keep them happy, which needs to stop.

Actually it was Clowe. He said it more like, if he could he would take a cut to not leave California. Obviously he's under contract so it's not really an option. He was speaking more to the fact that he loves it here.

So basically, we gave up Lukowich and Error in order to keep Torry, and Staubitz. And gain some cap space.

Dont really have a problem with this...

I wish he would've said that to Doug before signing his new contract...

Like that would matter with DW, really...

"Doug, I'll take 2 million a season to stay here in California"

"Ok Ryan, I like your negotiating skills. I'll give you 3.5."

He agreed to a 3.625 mil per deal for four years after he had been shopped at the draft...and that's what he says to you? If that's even remotely true, I'd have kicked him in the nuts for being an outright liar.

I really wish DW shipped him at the draft or let somebody sheet him.

Maybe he's really arrogant and feels he did take a big discount.

The way that poster said it makes it sound like it wasn't even his choice. Which either means the agent handles it all w/o question or DW is extremely dumb. Probably a little bit of both but mostly the prior. There's been issues with his agent in the past.

It's true. Keep in mind we're at a bar drinking...No one was sober. Oh and he's much bigger in person that what I thought, that eliminates kicks to the groin section. He was also a pretty nice guy.

So you were drinking, all the more reason to kick someone that you have no right trying to kick

I could imagine he is pretty big, Gooch was bigger than I thought. Murray is a giant.

Yeah Murray was there and he's a beast. Ryan Vesce was there as well

You should've just punched Vesce and told Clowe that was for him. Vesce is tiny.

Also late to the party here, but I've been ruminating on this... I think everyone is pretty excited for Torrey to be coming back because we know how good he's been, and how good he's probably going to be, and we thought he'd come in at a nice discount after losing an entire season.

Problem is, Torrey Mitchell (and his agent) also know how good he was in his rookie year, and how good he's likely to be now. So they weren't about to give a discount.

My initial reaction was dissapointment on the contract, but I believe he'll actually be a bargain at that price anyway. I mean, I don't know a single Sharks fan who doesn't love Torrey Mitchell. Skates like a V-2 rocket, and seem to have lots of heart... which this team needs more of.

If Mitchell had signed for 1 yr at 800k like most people (including myself) thought he would and then had a great year he might have asked for more than 1.3 next year when the cap drops. Now he's locked in. I like this signing a lot.

Which really wouldn't have mattered because 1: he'd still be an RFA and 2: he might've actually earned the deal.

Meaning that as an RFA, he's not going to ask for the moon when he's only got one team to really negotiate with. And secondly, in my estimation, he HASN'T earned it. Great arguments, LZ.

Since when did an RFA's negotiating rights keep him from making more than 1.3 mil? He could easily play well enough to ask for more and get it. Simply saying he would be an RFA isn't a great argument either.

And in my estimation he HAS earned it.

In my estimation, you two are like a married couple. Congrats PF, you are married to a hottie.

Just in case I need to say something on topic, he hasn't earned it just yet but I'm sure he will; maybe not the 1.7 figure, but 1.3 for sure.

It doesn't. However, it does limit his options and his career plus the circumstances leading up to this in my eyes doesn't warrant this kind of contract. He can easily play well enough to ask for more and get it but that would mean earning it and his career thus far has not earned this contract given to him by Doug Wilson. Being an RFA would've meant that we would've either kept him or got something for him elsewhere whereas some people seem to think that giving him a one year deal means the team would've lost him next year.

I'd like to see someone justify this contract giving comparables and going off of his career to date.

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer says to a car dealer "Is this car $12,000?" and the dealer erases the $10,000 sticker and says "It is now"

I would venture to guess there are many players who make more than this before they even play in the NHL - based on potential. Seto made 1.247 the day he stepped on NHL ice in the 07-08 season. A season he was sent back down to the AHL twice I believe. The fact you don't see him "proving it" yet shouldn't be the issue here. It's what you expect him to be worth during the 3 year contract. Based on what I have seen I think there is an excellent chance this contract will look excellent in hindsight.
