Vancouver Canucks
Vancouver, B.C. Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have re-signed defenceman Nathan McIver. In keeping with club policy terms were not disclosed.

McIver, 24, spent the 2008.09 season split between the Anaheim Ducks and Canucks. In 18 NHL games last season, all with Anaheim, McIver recorded one assist and 36 penalty minutes. In an additional 28 games with the Canucks American Hockey League affiliate, Manitoba Moose, McIver had two assists and 59 penalty minutes.

The 63, 205-pound defenceman was originally drafted 254th overall by the Canucks in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
(obviously for the moose)

10 year deal

$675 for the first three years
$625 for the next four
$525 for the last three

for a very reasonable cap hit of .610

LOL. Thank goodness for that loophole in the CBA, eh?
All kidding aside, McIver is about 13th on the depth chart at this point, with Ellington and Oberg likely to surpass him soon, too. He is probably wishing he was signing with a different organization today...

McIver is a pretty great 11th defenceman or so. He was Anaheim's number 7 guy for a while last season.

Mitchell
Bieksa
Salo
Edler
Ehrhoff
Schneider
O'Brien
Lukowich
------------
Rome
Nycholat
McIver
Baumgartner
Ellington
Oberg
Funk

I don't mind McIver. At least he will stick up for his team.

Probably because he cost us the great Mike Brown.

I'd rather have Mike Brown, he looked better in ANA than McIver has looked anywhere.

you'd rather have Mike Brown over who?

our 4th line wingers/extra forwards, right now are Hordichuk, Rypien, and Hansen... Bolduc is likely the top call-up for a 4th line role... Desbiens has just signed and could also fill that 4th line call-up role.

Where does Brown fit there? Who do you get rid of give Mike Brown a spot (who's waiver eligible now and would end up having to stay on the roster)?

McIver can slide into the bottom depth spots on defense, and even if we lose him on waivers after camp, it's not a big deal.

But I don't see anyone on our 4th line/extra forwards/top call-ups, that I'd replace in the depth rotation for Mike Brown. Good for him that he's doing well in Anaheim... he just wasn't a fit though on this team.

Thats fine, as far as a moose guy/emergency call up, I'd rather have Brown over McIver. It's the same situation if we lose him on waivers no big deal, but we lost McIver on waivers once, then traded Brown to get him back, now we've added lots of d-depth and re-signed him.

I'm not saying he needs to replace anyone, but we lost 3(?) Moose vets last year, Krog, Cullen, Jaffray and having a guy with some NHL experience there wouldn't hurt. Plus if Hordichuk or Rypien is down with an injury there aren't a lot of guys on the Moose with any toughness to fill that spot, particularly Hordichuk. Stashing a 4th liner/goon in the AHL in case of injury is useful, and as you said, lose him to waivers its no big deal.

WTF, if either Ehrhoff or Bieksa isn't moving this is a bit of a head-scratcher. Are the Moose jonesing for defense or something?

Not that McIvor is going threaten anyone's top 6 time, but, he's a capable 7/8 if need be. Perhaps a SOB replacement? Brings the toughness when needed and won't balk at being at 7th or 8th on the depth chart.

The Mooose defense was one of the main reasons why they didn't win the Calder Cup and now it's even further depleted with certain departures. McIver would be one of those guys that would be a mentor for the new guys on the team this upcoming season.

McIvor is a street in Northeast Winnipeg, so I don't know what player you're talking about Jokes aside, I'm thinking along the same lines, as long as we don't lose him on waivers like we did last season.

With Fistric, Fortunus (Dallas property) and Rahimi now gone, Gillis is just restocking the D down in Manitoba.

Funk, Rome, Nycholat, Baumgartner and McIver would all be capable replacements in the NHL should there be a significant number of injuries on the Canucks' D.

He had a pretty awful post-season for the Moose (not sure about the regular season). He'd be WAY down (IMHO) the list with respect to the Canucks depth chart.

But you're correct in that we don't have alot of defenseman prospects.

Sauve's only 19, he's going back to the Q.

Sauve will be in the Q for another year. They have Ramsey signed also though.

I would hope so. They usually have a couple extra hanging around in case of injury and call up. The Moose D are going to be very different this year.

Thanks for the spelling correction. I freaking looked up Ehrhoff and Bieksa and blew the easy name staring at me at the top of the page.

When everyone's healthy, unless someone has a disappointing early season, I don't know how SOB is going to crack the top six. SOB wasn't a happy press box camper last year and I wouldn't be surprised if Gillis, "does him a favour," (and avoids a future distraction) by sending him to a team that will give him a lot more minutes.

Maybe SOB has grown into a big picture guy, but, there are quite a few teams, even a couple decent ones, looking for some capable toughness in their regular 3rd pair.

Think Victoria was short on D last season, so it's not like nobody could be "lent" for a period of time from Manitoba.

Sauve is heading back to the Q, he's still 19 and can't play in the AHL at this point.
