::edit::

Updated the article just now with an example of why a press conference would have helped TSN with a Coyotes Season preview article they just published.

He's probably off crying in his cheap American beer about the chances he's had to land that top 6 scorer but being forced into living with what he's got.

I meant other than Vest. Vest asks ok questions but not the questions that need to be asked. Compared to other NHL teams (or pro/college teams for that matter), this is very unusual practice with the media.

Kind of a waste of an article if you ask me. Why wouldn't Maloney have a press conference about re-signing Daniel Winnik? Why do you think? How many questions about the ownership situation vs. Winnik's chances of making the squad next year? About a 10-1 ratio? Maloney is in a can't win situation here right now and is doing everything in his power to keep the franchise pointed in the right direction. Realistically, maybe the Vrbata deal or the Yandle re-signing needed something more than a press release but given the circumstances I think we can give Maloney a pass.

Yeah, if it were Tanguay or Kessel, there would've been a press conference and a jersey. I don't think the Vrbatas and Aucoins of the world really justify a presser/photo opp.

I would think that communications from the team's head office would naturally be curtailed by the current legal imbroglio.

Just updated the article and the thread with an addition to the article explaining why a media availability session with GMDM this off-season would have helped press-types out.

He's been at the practices. I talked to him for a few minutes. He said he's just as confused as the rest of us. Do we have any questions for him (non BK related ones) just in case I run into him again this next week.

Still fishing for a veteren top six scorer, or are we going to see what we've got in camp, first?

There is no other choice. No other choice should even be momentarily considered.

Pretty sure Pyatt signing is last one unless Don finds an enforcer b4 camp but I'll ask anyway LOL

Simple answer

Don Maloney spent 7 years working for Glen Sather who hardly ever talks to any media. Sather has talked three times to the media this summer. In Montreal at the draft. On June 30 when the Rangers traded Scott Gomez to Montreal.On July 1 when the Rangers signed Marian Gaborik and Donald Brashear.That conference call was more Gaborik than Brashear. All of the other moves made by the Rangers were just conference calls with the players.

It was never to be a "press conference". Media (and bloggers) were advised that it was a press availability. That's a typical media presentation. Maloney is almost always available by phone or e-mail. I suspect he was told to lay low by the NHL because of the Gretzky issue.

What's the point of speaking to the media when 90% of the questions would be BK related?

Well that's where the PR/Media contact comes in. He sets the ground rules of the presser and keeps the media on track if they delve into areas that were told that the media can't ask questions about.
