Wow, hopefully Howell stays in the game if that's the kind of location he has.

it's not an injury as his velocity is normal. His command has been downright awful the last few starts, though he did strikeout 9 tonight in 6 innings.

His velocity was a little off in the early going. When he was reaching back for a little more, it just wasn't there.

He appeared to have settled in later on, but those first few innings were rough. Maybe he's got it all sorted out?

It's most likely dead arm in my eyes. He did pitch a ton of long starts in July.

Pedro vs. Lincecum on MLB Network. Pedey looks awesome, matching Lincecum pitch for pitch. Both pitchers have allowed 1 run through 5 innings with 8 K's. I love Pedro.

Another nice win tonight, the Sox need to go on a nice little 5-7 game win streak and hopefully put some space in the WC

I'll take 2 out of 3 from the Rays. Their "biggest win of the season" was followed up by their biggest loss of the season.

Buchholz is really stepping up when we needed him to do so the most, props to Clay.

Went to a bar last night and watched both this game and the Patriots-Giants game side-by-side. 20 K's between the two pitchers; one is 25, the other is almost 38. Pedro's still got it, but I'm glad the Sox didn't bring him back. His arm went to hell in the third year with the Mets and he wasn't the same in the fourth year. Still, if some of the rumors I've heard about the way the Sox went about not re-signing him are true, it doesn't improve my opinion of Henry and Lucchino.

Papelbon Fined Again For Slow Play

This is getting to be ridiculous. At least 5 times? As many as 7?

If the MLBPA was really concerned about their players, they'd step in. I understand that a rule is a rule, but Papelbon doesn't appear to be the slowest guy in the league when he's holding the ball, just the slowest high-profile pitcher.

If you want to talk about speeding up the pace of play, then make it go both ways. More time is wasted when a batter calls time, steps out, adjusts his helmet, fiddles with his gloves, kicks dirt, steps back in, and takes three slow practice swings than when a pitcher waits for the sign, takes a breath or two, and delivers the pitch. Make the rule where a batter has to keep one foot in the batter's box at all times or he's out.

Lou Merloni actually made a very similar point on last nights "Sports Tonight" on CSN that I caught this morning. He mentioned how umpires would always get at batters to get back in the box, and it threw off their routine, etc. He basically was saying that if the MLB wanted to speed the game up, don't allow batters to step out of the box after every pitch etc. He also criticized the fact that the fine Papelbon for taking to long getting from the pen to the mound and between pitches, yet the real culprit of these past few games against the Rays being long, was the fact that Joe Maddon was seemingly switching pitchers after every batter.
