Bates gets tryout with the Avalanche

The Avalanche have given a tryout contract to Shawn Bates, you got bought out by the Islanders a few seasons ago. He played in the SM-Liiga last year.

I assumed he retired after the Islanders bought him out. Looking at his stats in Europe not that bad. Decent 4th line guy but chances are he will get injured.

He was never in shape. That was his biggest problem. If he were better conditioned, he'd have been a better, healthier player. Hopefully he has learned not to take the NHL for granted and will be a leaner meaner highly motivated version of the player we once knew.

Hard to stay in shape when you constantly injured(I believe mostly groin injuries)

Sadly, it was about the only moment that Islander fans got to do that in the past 16+ seasons.

As for Bates, I wish him well, but I really don't think he has anything left unless he regained his speed miraculously.

I used to love Webb, but there's no question he used to leave his feet all the time when he hit people. I can see a lot of people having problems with that.

Watching him kill Tucker like six thousand times sure is nice, though.

You know, that is so true...I can't remember the last time that there was so many established players going to camp for tryouts and not having a contract or anything:

Allison, Lang, Legace, Calder, Bates, McLaren, Sydor, Hinote, etc.

I mean, none of them are going to be expected to do much (except Lang....he might surprise if he's fully healthy).

Good for him (and Silly too for his appointment).

A cult hero in 2002, scored GWG against the Leafs on an OT penalty shot.

I think he should make the team as a 3rd line player. We have pretty poor depth.

That said, this is in the line of additional BU-trained players and coaches making their way into the Avalanche system... Joe Sacco (NHL head coach), David Quinn (AHL head coach), Kevin Shattenkirk (1st round pick, 2007), etc. etc.
