If Kyle Mclaren is our best crease-clearing D than that signifies a serious problem, not a solution.

Gilroy told me that Grachev has been the most out of shape when the guys have skated together.

Take it with a grain of salt.

Wouldn't surprise me. He was shut down after the regular season because of the (unconfirmed) concussion, and again for the final day of camp for unspecified reasons. He missed the Russian junior series in mid-August due to (unconfirmed) injury. Doesn't sound like he was able to do much all summer.

How did you get a chance to talk to Gilroy?

that's my guess on who will get the final spots just based out of size for the first 2 and puck moving for Gilroy

I hope Sanguinetti and Sauer prove me wrong though

Potter I think will be a call up and then gone as a FA, too much depth in the system. He is like a Mark Bell type guy who will be up and down if anything

DelZotto one more year in the minors, same with Kundratek who I am exited to see
To be able to use that hitting ability, you need to be able to get a head of steam going and skate with guys. Pass on McLaren, although I like the invite to push the younger guys to really earn the spot. McLaren would be a horrible fit in the kind of system Torts runs anyway

He was at iceworks on thursday. Higgins skates there too.

Plus, I talk to him on facebook all the time. He went to my highschool. St Mary's HS in Manhasset. I was a freshmen when he was a senior.

That's cool. How is he looking with his skating? How does he feel?

Agreed, im not concerned about the fact he was out of shape, but the fact that he wasn't able to use this offseason put some more muscle on because of a potential bad concussion. If he did have a concussion then they probably didn't want him over doing it. Hopefully its not that bad. I'd almost rather him just be out of shape from being lazy, then being out of shape because of a bad concussion.

Gilroy would know what constitutes being in great shape, as a well placed source informed me Gilroy is in top notch shape.

Too bad about Grachev, but if he is not in great shape, that does not bode well to push for a spot in a camp run by Torts.

So it is pretty safe to say that if Potter doesn't make the team out of camp he will be traded. Anyone else feel the same?

I doubt Potter has enough value to even bother trading him.

Same thought process here. Don't see a reason to trade him either.

I know a few guys from that skate and they've said it's a really good group of guys working their ass off for next season. A lot of guys looking to prove something next year.

Well I feel he is an NHL #6 or 7 dman. I'm sure some team can use him in that role.

theres really only 2 spots open at camp the way i see it. im sure gilroy is a lock. the 6th spot and then the extra dman.

im predicting right now that one of your young dmen will be ilka heikkenin.

hes got a good 2 way game and can shoot it hard. skates well good size. hes solid. and hes an '84 same age as gilroy. i predict hes the guy thats going to stand out the most in camp.

pencil him in along with ....... whomever plays the best of sangs, mdz, potter and sauer as the 7th man. but, again i think that 6th spot will be fluid. the 6th spot and 7th may be interchangeable really.

itll look like this

staal/girardi
redden/gilroy
rozy/ *

* heikkenin/potter/sauer

that 6th/7th spot be alternated alot early on with all the guys who show well in camp getting chances on callups. kinda like an extended camp. it may not be settled for a few months into the season before someone steps up and grabs that job with a few goals and some steady d play.

if it is heik in that 6th spot, this defense will have alot more offensive ability to breakout plays with good passes and skating than last year team. also, both heik and gilroy shoot it very well.

Gilroy is a lock in the top 7, even if a vet is brought in.

Thats basically a given, unless he screws up completly. The thing is, with 2-3 kids on the blueline, and none of them beeing extremely steady (like Marc Staal), they will have their ups and downs. Even if like Sanguinetti and Michael Sauer plays superb in camp, they won't be superb for 82 straight games, they'll probably will struggle to line up 10 straight games at a high level.

Camp is a pretty short sample, pre-season games is played at a much lower level then normal NHL games, and Torts knows that. At the worst for Gilroy he'll find himself in a group of 3 kids competing for 2 spots.

I still don't see Slats letting us start the season with a rookie as 7th d-man. Torts and Slats will want the rookie in Hartford logging mins rather than sitting out. Maybe Potter is a possibility because he's 25 and pretty much reached his upside? I don't know.

Personally, I'd rather have a vet as 7th guy and have a 3 man rotation with the 2 rookies as 5th or 6th man.

Potter's the ideal 7th d-man.

Don't we lose him as an UFA if he doesn't play a certain # of games anyway?

Other possibility here is that Del Zotto is kept with the big team for the first 10 games of the season and is then sent back to OHL and Potter or Sauer is called up. If Del Zotto impresses in pre-season - I think the 10 game look is worth the shot and even if he ultimately gets sent back down the experience could pay off. My guess is Gilroy, Heikinnen and Del Zotto for 10 games before being replaced by Sauer or Potter. Sangs is back in the AHL to start the season.
