I have nothing against Belak, he does his job quite well.
He can fight very well even compared to most enforcers, he's damn strong and never backs down from anyone. He also has an excellent work ethic and seems to genuinely enjoy the game which is more then I can say for many players.
He's the typical minimal skill enforcer, sure I wouldn't want him to play a regular shift on the 3rd D pairing or 4'th line, but as an injury fill in or when we need a little extra toughness he's more then capable of filling that role, and his flexibility in positioning makes him more valuable then most enforcers IMHO.
So long as he's not relied upon for a regular shift, I'm very happy with Belak's contributions.
No love for Belak? I'm quite surprised to read the comments from some posters here.
With all due respect to Belak, he hasn't had a real shot at proving himself as he was always used as the "Utility Player". There were some games where he would take the pre-game warmup thinking he was playing forward and then Quinn would switch him to Defence. This guy would just suck it all up and do whatever was required because he is a team guy first. Then he would go and take on their best fighter to represent.
I also have to say that I can't recall a single game where he 'screwed up'. Yeah he didn't put many totals up on the scoreboard, but why was he still in the lineup?
Because he is an important component of the Leafs, one that does many other things that is needed that may not be visible to some. And this is the reason why he holds a roster spot.
