Quote:
Last year van Riemsdyk raised a few eyebrows by going back to school for a second year. The Flyers gave a reluctant blessing to the decision and van Riemsdyk said he appreciates the team's patience.

"There were a couple reasons,'' he explained. "After my freshman year, we kind of fizzled out in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Going to UNH, I really wanted to make a mark there, to win a championship.

"And there were some things I needed to work on to be prepared for the pro game. Every decision I've made, (the Flyers) have been fully supportive. They haven't put too much pressure on me.''

Van Riemsdyk played briefly for the Phantoms at the end of last season to help ease the transition but Flyers coach John Stevens wants him to come to camp thinking NHL.

"I would hope he would come in wanting to make our team,'' Stevens said. "His attitude has to be that he wants to be here. He's a big guy; he's worked really hard, great hands, high hockey intelligence.

"Now we're going to see how competitive he is at the NHL level. He's not 18 right out of the draft, he's 20. I just want him to come in and be a competitive two-way player. ... His competitiveness is what we need to see.''

That's fine with van Riemsdyk. He's looking forward to "proving'' himself before friends, family and somewhat hometown fans.

Rookie Camp started today I think, did anyone happen to see / hear anything about it? Who looked good, who was disappointing, etc.

Must've done well at the summer prospects camp. He's a really talented player, we might have a player there.

I hope FlyHigh reads this one

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...under_way.html

Quote:
When the 29 guys arrived at the Voorhees SkateZone for the first day of Flyers rookie camp, they were quickly directed to attend a morning weigh-in. The notes, hanging in various parts of the locker area, also read in bold, black letters: "LATENESS IS SERIOUSLY DISCOURAGED."

Just about all of the guys who will participate in this week's camp will be farmed out to the team's minor league affiliates. But, as coach John Stevens noted, it is laying the foundation for how to be a professional. Punctuality is a cornerstone.
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...okie_camp.html

Quote:
The five-day rookie camp will conclude with a game Friday in Voorhees against the Washington Capitals' prospects at 3 p.m. The camp and the exhibition game are open to the public and are free.
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/57632782.html

Quote:
As the Flyers open their rookie camp in Voorhees today, several young wingers appear to have the best chance to land roster spots.

The departures of Mike Knuble and Joffrey Lupul have left holes at wing. That's a positive for the likes of James van Riemsdyk, Andreas Nodl, and Patrick Maroon, who are among the wingers the Flyers have drafted in recent years.

It also could benefit Ryan Dingle, a scrappy winger acquired with star defenseman Chris Pronger in the deal that sent Lupul, Luca Sbisa, two first-round draft picks, and a conditional draft selection to Anaheim in June.

Should I say anything or just keep my mouth shut?

It's funny that it seems like I get identified more with Stevens hating when I was actually pretty late onto the bandwagon, I probably didn't hop until the Nitty-Biron thing in 07-08. Guess I post too much.

"Seriously discouraged"??

Good God.... how about "Lateness means you don't play". Or "Lateness gets your ass kicked".

If that's what the rookies are being taught, it's a franchise-wide issue that won't be resolved easily.

Homer, go in there, knock people on their *****, and turn this puppy around.

He tried that last year, only for Stevens to say that it was OK we lost to Ottawa the next night since we had to fight back from selfish penalties against a team whose season was over.

If i was invited to a pro level camp I'd in there well before it started just to soak things in and make sure I was mentally prepared. Then again, I'm a goalie, we tend to get to practice early just because it takes us longer to get changed. Reminds me of my college team rules. 1. Don't be late to practice, 2. Don't be drunk when you get there

According to some Tweets, Blair Betts is coming to training camp, to which I say, why bother and just sign him.

Not a whole lot better than what we had, but has been over 50% in the past. Logs a lot of PK time though.

Which we are gonna be on for a hell of a time this upcoming season too. This is one of the biggest reasons why I hope we sign him...

I said this in another thread (I'm just going to make one of it's own to funnel the discussion), but 16 PIMs for an energy guy who led his team in ice time, one that couldn't score, so he was relied on in big spots and didn't hurt him. Having an all-world goalie doesn't hurt though.

I remember reading an article on him right after we drafted him that said he had no glaring issues on the ice and was an extremely well balanced player that showed a lot of maturity. It was some sort of a " best steals of the draft" article and they also had Riopel listed as well.

Sorry I don't and I tried googling it again. I was actually looking for info on Riopel when I found it and as a was reading it, I was like "Lebreque" sounds awfully familiar, where have I heard that name recently? The writer mentioned that they felt Lebreque fell deep in the draft because he didn't do anything particularily well so teams looking for something specific kept picking other guys over him. They also praised the Flyers for picking so many guys "off the radar" and that they couldn't remember a time that a team picked so many guys that were unranked.

Labrecque was a key player on Shawinigan, who were in the Q finals vs Bourdon - so the Flyer scouts saw him.

Lighten up...there's clearly a sarcastic overtone to that sign. Maybe it would have helped if they put this () on there too?
