It's readily apparent that some people need serious adjustments to their sarcasm detectors.

Interesting read on JVR

I'm not sure if this was posted, or where to put it. Feel free to move it if need be.

Flyers' Van Riemsdyk doesn't mind comparisons to Blackhawks' Kane

Quote:
VOORHEES, N.J. -- In the 2007 draft, Patrick Kane was chosen No. 1 overall, and the right winger has had two impressive seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Flyers fans bemoaned receiving the No. 2 pick in the 2007 lottery, even though the team finished with the NHL's lowest point total (56).

With that pick, the Flyers chose winger James van Riemsdyk, a Middletown, N.J., native who will always draw comparisons to Kane.

That doesn't bother the player known as "JVR" and "Reemer." Indeed, van Riemsdyk (pronounced van reems dike) welcomes the comparisons.

"It's no pressure at all; it gives me more confidence just because I put myself in a similar level to play like him," van Riemsdyk said after the first on-ice workouts were held at the Flyers' rookie camp yesterday in Voorhees. "He's having some good success, so hopefully, I can follow off him."

Van Riemsdyk, 20, played the last two years at the University of New Hampshire.

Players develop at different rates. Sidney Crosby was drafted No. 1 overall in 2005 and quickly turned into a star. The player drafted No. 2 that season, Cherry Hill's Bobby Ryan, took several years before he became an NHL force and last season had 31 goals for Anaheim.

The Flyers would be ecstatic if van Riemsdyk blossomed along the lines of Ryan. New Flyer Ryan Dingle, who played with Ryan in the AHL, said van Riemsdyk and Ryan have similar personalities and aren't weighed down by expectations.

"They don't let it get to them," said Dingle, who, along with van Riemsdyk and Patrick Maroon, is among the candidates for open wing spots. "They're both phenomenal character guys and both great, great hockey players. And once they get that chance, they'll get their foot in the door. There's a reason why they were drafted No. 2. I'm excited to see the future of James."

JvR would probably make it as a 3rd line LW and maybe Maroon later in the season as a call up or maybe next season. JvR paired up with Giroux and Briere would be some scary stuff haha.

Will JVR's contract be amended if he makes the big club?

I won lie though, a third line of JVR-Powe-Maroon scares me. We got a 1 year vet and 2 rooks.

OK, so the pro contract he signed last year would not count? I remember there being something different about the contract.

Pretty sure he signed his 3 year ELC after the end of last season. He's in the same boat as say, Giroux.

At the end of the season he signed an amateur tryout contract for the AHL only (or something like that)- his NHL contract started thereafter.

If he plays in the NHL he gets paid like it, if he's in the AHL he gets the mandatory AHL rate (all ELC are two way).

Adrian Foster is the guy that the Devils held up in the 2000 draft, because the Devils had to prove that the guy was eligible to be drafted. He was hurt in his draft year (would prove to be a recurring trend), and was not in the CSB databse. TSN had to scramble to find information on him, because no one knew who he was, prompting the "apparently, Adrian Foster is here" line. The Devils told him to be at the draft because they were going to pick him.

So he showed up and then just disappeared right after that instance from the NHL eye?

Some guy on Philly.com has reports on the first two days of rookie camp. They're not all that informative, but they're better than nothing. I haven't seen any other reports anywhere, from people who were actually there, so I figured I'd post the link here. If that guy posts here, I hope this is OK.

Thanks for posting. At least it's something. Not good to hear that Maroon is struggling. With about 10 other guys looking to fill the spots he needs to be on top to get a shot.

I was watching some interviews last night and thought Dingle was a likable guy. I hadn't seen him before. I'm kinda pulling for him now. On a related note, is it just me or have we seen an increase of talk about him since camp started. I count 3 articles specifically mentioning him. I suppose it could be because of being involved in the trade but for a guy I thought was an ECHL'er there has definately been some discussion.

I watched the Flyers TV thing with Dingle too. I'm with you. He seems like a really cool, down to earth guy. Good guy to have on the team. I wonder how much skill he actually has though.
I can't believe Maroon used to be Fat Pat. Dude is skinny!!!

Thank you for the info, DVR. I'll take anything I can get. You da man.

From Tim's hockey buzz column...

But this update is significant. Simon Gagne is scrimmaging today with the veterans. Each morning, they go on the ice for about an hour or more and scrimmage. It's half-speed, no checking.

Gagne looks fine to me and he's keeping up with the play. Jeff Carter, just back from NYC as part of the NHL tour, is on the ice, as well, along with Chris Pronger, who was also on tour.

Mark Bell, the troubled, much-traveled forward, has been part of every one of these vets-only player scrimmages in the morning along with Ryan Parent and Scott Hartnell.
