Mike Richards update (from Tim P.)

http://www.csnphilly.com/pages/landi...664&feedID=695

Quote:
Double offseason shoulder surgery is a true rarity in professional sports.

Which is one reason why Flyers captain Mike Richards may be a bit wary of going on the ice Sunday morning and taking his first actual hit since spring’s playoffs.

“I feel good, but I haven’t been hit yet,” Richards admitted Saturday morning as veterans reported for physicals. On Sunday, full training camp opens.

Any trepidation about contact?

“Yeah, a little bit,” Richards said. “I’m sure it’s going to be fine. I’ve been told it’s going to be fine but until you take that first hit, there’s always a little bit of caution there. I want to get it out of the way [Sunday] morning. Get the confidence you can take a hit and give a hit.

“I feel strong pushing off people and doing everything in the gym. I skated at the [Olympic] orientation camp and everything was fine.”

Quote:
Rest assured, Pronger won’t tolerate things we’ve seen in recent years where the Flyers played one period instead of three for more than a game. Pronger figures to be the loudest guy in the room since Derian Hatcher and Keith Primeau, both of whom wore the “C.”

Pronger is expected to wear an “A” most nights this season.

“The leaders we’ve had before have been more quiet guys, like Danny [Briere], Kimmo [Timonen] and myself,” Richards said. “It is nice to have that guy who will go out and say it straight out. We’ve that before, too, and it’s always worked out.”

If Pronger gets an A, who loses one?

Kind of strange.

I'm intrigued.

If Pronger will get an A, who will lose theirs, Simon or Kimo?

Regards,
Rick

^ Maybe a rotation?

The article mentions "most" nights.

Gormley's new article for the CP:
http://www.courierpostonline.com/art...ady-for-action

Two things of note:
1. 4 Alternate captains, rotating - Kimo, Gags, Briere(?!), and Pronger

2. Briere playing first line RW with Gags and Cannon

Regards,
Rick

I'm sort of thinking Kimmo will lose his, just because Gagne has been here for such a long time. And, when the Flyers lost Forsberg in 06-07, Gagne was a consideration for Captain. I'm thinking he won't be deprived of his "A".

Thanks for the CP link:

If that info all came from Homer and wasn't "gleaned" by Chuck it raises some questions and answers other.

Answers that I get:
1)Cote will need to prove he can do more than fight which I don't think he can.
2)the D seems pretty set which I hate but whatever.
3) The Phantoms goal sitch will be pretty much what we all thought it would be.
4) The assistant captain thing has been answered
5) They expect Betts to make the team and Bell to not

The big question for me is who the heck are they planning on putting with Giroux?
Briere will be with Richards and Gagne to start camp but Giroux will still be started at center. If that stays and Carter stays with Hartnell then what? I guess we had better hope that BOTH JVR and Maroon are ready to take the step so that one goes with Carter and Giroux can at least have one guy with him that can score. Hmmm.

Powe Giroux Lappy
Pyorola Giroux Powe
Carcillo Giroux Bell
Bell Giroux Lappy
Maroon Giroux Powe
JVR Giroux Lappy
Carcillo Giroux Lappy

boy I don't know. I think if Briere shifts lines, Giroux almost has to go with Carter. Should be an interresting couple of weeks.

Answers to questions 3 and 6 are also interesting. Might be useful in the lineup thread. Thanks for sharing.

They could do 2 A's at home and 2 A's away

Home:
Gagne
Pronger

Away
Briere
Timonen

+1

you don't need a letter on your jersey to be a leader.

Really? I've been more interested in the articles posted in this thread than I have with anything else here the last couple weeks.

Man, the offseason sucks.

What else do you want to talk about? I posted this before but:

1) Upshall vs Carcillo
2) Briere can't play defense
3) Kaberle?
4) Jones can't play defense
5) Stevens cant coach
6) What is our lineup for the 10,000th time?

Its the offseason and so far no one has talked about who gets the A. Kind of rude of you to say this was not a necessary thread.

Thanks MSE for the info though. I was wondering if Pronger did get an A or not

A lot of teams have 3 alternates. Edmonton has 4.
I wouldn't be surprised to see...
Richards C
Pronger A
Gagne A
Timonen or Briere A

Maybe Briere having an "A" will give him confidence?

I have a feeling that Richards will be done by the age of 30-32.

Nah, he'll be fine. I think that since the shoulder injury, Richards will tone down his play in that he won't continue to go out there and just hit everything in sight. He'll start picking his spots better. It happens with all young players. Tocchet played a similar style too in that he played with a bull in a china shop mentality.

The coaching staff really needs to ingrain into everyone that you don't have to continually hammer people in order to be intimidating. By that, sometimes just being on the ice and having the opposition think they might get hit is another form of intimidation, especially if they don't know when they're going to get it.

I think they might try Powe with Giroux based on what was said in an article from a while ago, where Homer was reported as saying that they were going to try to give Powe a bigger role.

I agree that thinking you might get hit can be sort of intimidating........but knowing damn well that you are getting hammered is very intimidating.

That having been said, I agree that there is a reason first liners aren't usually the guys handling that type of work. Let your 3rd and 4th liners do that, at least until play offs come around.

I should have been a little more clear about that. Not knowing who is going to lower the boom is much more intimidating. I think that's the message that needs to be delivered to guys like Richards. Don't worry about making the big hit every game. Every team in the league knows that he's a physical guy. Let them worry about someone else in the lineup lowering the boom on them.

Exactly. Asking your scorers to also be a physical presence is a recipe for injuries. Let the grunt work players look after that part of the game.

Or, alternatively, he could join a sports league that has a player's union that fought for guaranteed contracts... Oh, wait...
