Does not trading Kaberle for prospects and picks not look pretty bad now?

at least if he was able to bring in some high picks or prospects, the effect of making this trade would be much less impacting on our system.

haha, that one made me laugh

Boston does seem to be a hell of a stock broker

It buy's low and sells high and keeps the profits for themselves

It's always incredible to me how teams like Boston always seem to be able to spin assets into more assets, dumping third string goalies for blue chip goalies, unwanted players for multiple assets. Same with any team that deals with Toronto, basically.

Don't forget that second was traded for a second and a third. Do a rundown of our next two drafts with this deal and we virtually have NO high end picks. That's not a recipe for success in a cap world.

I am fully confident the Leafs will end up with Kessel, but consider this: the first two months of the season are going to be rough on the offense:

Dont forget we have 30 NHL level players fighting for 23 spots.

We will acquire amply of draft picks.

Picks are question marks.
Phil Kessel is a proven elite 21 yr old stud.

If the price has gotten this expensive

I think he should go ahead and offer him the max he can for hte limit to give a 1st, 2nd and 3rd and force Boston to match it

If they do, then they are going to lose a good player to make room. If they dont, we keep our 2011 1st rounder.

Ha!

Just like we were supposed to parlay Mayers, Hollweg, Van Ryn and the like into picks at the deadline right?

Yes, we're just loaded with wanted talent eh? Funny how hard it is to pry picks away from other teams, but we act like they're expendable.

Not sure if this is already up, but I like the other scenarios from Toronto Sports Media:

The first you may have seen on the net or twitter tonight, two first round picks and a second for Kessel.
The second is a first round pick plus a top 6 forward on the Maple Leafs who the Bruins are extremely high on and may actually be insisting on in any deal for Kessel, in return the Maple Leafs may actually get a pick back plus Kessel.
The third would involve a mix of prospects and picks in exchange for Kessel.

Yeah as a division rival, I wouldn't mind putting the screws to Boston.

If they don't want to play ball, make them match an offer sheet to Kessel. When Kessel comes back rusty they'll be forced to move a high priced guy and that might disrupt their team mid season. Let's see how they'll like having a malcontent like that on their hands.

The fat Kessel contract will also force their hand with either letting Savard go and keeping guys like Lucic and Rask and Wheeler next year.

I don't mind seeing Boston sweat one bit. Force their hand a little and if it's a no go, they have to live with the consequences.

keep separate threads!!

Kessel is a major conversation piece right now - and it the off season!

If espn writes a new article with rumors I'd like to hear about it - its so much easier to look through all the threads on the first page than to look through 40+ pages of posts

.....my 2 cents =)

two first rounders is too much imo. but what do i know... i think this guy is a goal scorer and a good one at that, but i don't think he's in the upper echelon of game changers. if burke knows/thinks differently then maybe it makes sense...

thing is, we wanted a first rounder back with kaberle for kessel in the first place, now we're willing to give up two first rounders for just kessel?? that equates to kaberle > 2 first round picks. that doesn't make any sense...

Outside of Gaborik none of those guy's are top line guy's. I think the preds end up getting Kessel,BUT I really hope Burke can pull it off.

If he can't,he should be fired.

If Boston wants a 1st, 1st, and 2nd round pick for Kessel then we need to go the offer sheet route. Burke will look bad in the media because of the Kevin Lowe/Dustin Penner thing, but really who cares? Its not like we will be making many trades with Boston in the near future. They are a divisional rival. They already took us to the cleaners with the Rask/Raycroft deal.

I can accept paying 1st, 2nd, 3rd compensation. Or even a trade that may be slightly more in favor for Boston. But a 1st, 1st, and 2nd is highway robbery imo.
