Zherdev offers to return to NYRS for his QO

The Dumbass of the Year award has to go to Nikolai Zherdev.

Quote:
The Post has learned that the agent for Nikolai Zherdev, who rejected the Rangers' $3.25 million qualifier and then became a free agent when the team walked away from his $3.9 million arbitration award, called the club this week offering to return for $3.25 million. The offer was refused.
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/more_...wwoELvW8ClVkdN

Instead of just signing the QO,he files for salary arbitration and gets awarded $3.9 million. The Rangers walk away and Zherdev find crumbs available on the free agent market. So his agent Rolland Hedges calls the Rangers and offers to play for the same $3.25 million they scoffed at 2 months ago.

Dominic Moore is another finalist for that award. If Moore's agent Larry Kelly called Brian Burke to accept his 3 years/$5.1 million offer in the last few weeks, then Moore gets the award.

Did he really think the Rangers would welcome him back?

What happened to Zherdev's deal with Atlanta? He couldn't stop talking about it ten days ago. They would rather see if Evander Kane makes the team rather than get involved with Zherdev.

Does he still have the same agent? I heard he let that guy go and was now working with the same agent as Kovy (Grossman I think it is).

If the above is true, perhaps his old agent is trying to make it up to him and get him a place to play?

Regardless he comes off looking like an idiot and pathetic. It is just tooooooo funny how this all turned out.

There are many players who need to be questioning their agents' advice at this point. Manny Malhotra being another I would imagine.

It's especially troubling because both Zherdev and Moore are in the prime of their respective careers, coming off good seasons (for them) and are, in my opinion, solid NHL regulars. I mean, I can understand fringy players who were always overpaid to begin with not finding any space on a team in a cap world but these guys are both capable players.

That being said, it looks good on both of them. It reminds me of something Brett Hull said before the lockout about the real problem with the NHL being the fact that regular players (like these guys) make too much money. Let's face it, 3 or 4 million for regular guys (albeit with some skill) is simply too much in a game with such a limited market. Frankly, I think Hull was right on although a bit dickish.

Do these agents know that there's a salary cap? There's only X amount of total cap space in the entire league and it seems by now every team is either at their limit, at their internal limit, or the Pheonix Coyotes. This is leaving capable NHLers without jobs (Zherdev) or taking crappy 1-year deals just to play (Tanguay).

Hate on Zherdev all you want, but the Rangers are the losers in this case. I'm even a fan of the Rangers, but the ridiculous contract to, say, Brashear is ridiculous.

This story has to be bull, because once you walk away from the arbitration award that player cannot play for you that season. Even if Zherdev said he'd play for the Rangers for free, it wouldn't be able to happen. Another Brooks lie I guess, the guy must really hate Nik.

Is this accurate? I believe that if he signs for less than the QO, the Rangers have a right of refusal to take him back.

I'd like to see a CBA expert clear this up, because I am pretty confident the Rangers can't walk away from the arbitration and then re-sign him for less than the award. It would essentially defeat the purpose of the arbitration rights.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I seem to recall that if the team walks away, the said player cannot join their team for a single year. There is a chance that I'm wrong, though, but given his track record and even larger chance that Brooks is just grinding his axe.

He needs to offer himself up to Nashville at 3 mil.

I bet they'd take a chance on him.

You are thinking about the compliance buyouts which prohibited teams from re-signing players after buying them out.

Look at article 12 in the CBA. There is no clause which prohibits re-signing the player.

I don't think so. You don't think Hedges has not spoken with Poile?

Old CBA.1995-2004. The clause is not in the current CBA.

I'd give him a shot in Colorado if he would except a 1yr 3mil deal just to see if he would pan out.

Seems like Zherdev doesn't want to play for a second-tier league like the KHL.....

What this more proves is that the arbitration scale is flawed. If that's what you're awarded, if the team doesn't want him, I'm sure it's designed so that someone else would. That's something that needs to be fixed here.

He'd be a star and make more money there than he would in the NHL.

I'm honestly surprised he hasn't signed with a KHL team yet.

I dunno why Nashville hasn't snatched him up yet...

now I am confused

I thought that if a team walks away from an agreement he cold not resign with that team for one year at a lower rate
