Urbom was very impressive at the Devils rookie camp. The numbers are good and we have an opening on defense, so now we just have to see if Lemaire likes what he sees in the next few days.

Yes he's been very impressive and his defensive accumen has been in no doubt, but I highly doubt he makes the roster. Eckford and Corrente are ahead in development and ahead on the depth chart right now.

It is surprising how quickly Urbom has rised to the occasion. Hopefully he goes to the WHL for at least the coming season to get used to the North American game against guys his own age.

Well, who thought Johnny Oduya would make the NHL back in '07? Or Anssi Salmela last year?

Just saying that anything can happen if you have a great camp, and the Devils brass already has enough confidence in him to give him a contract just a few months after getting drafted.

3rd rounder in '09? if he made the team either you have a terrible defence or a steal.

Oduya and Salmela were 24-year old vets of the Swedish and Finnish men's leagues respectively. Urbom is an 18-year old kid. Not comparable situations in the least.

Urbom will probably go to juniors.

It doesn't really mean anything; everyone should still anticipate that he goes to the WHL for a season, primarily to work on his offensive game (to discover if he has one). After that, though, he's skyrocketed up our defensive depth chart and could legitimately challenge for an NHL roster spot as soon as next season.

Unless he plays completely out of his mind, Urbom will most likely be in the WHL this year. Next year, I think he'll start in the AHL and get callups, but I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the big club and sticks by the end of the season.

When was the last time the Devils brought in an 18-year old d-man? Scotty Niedermayer?

I don't thik Urbom is close to making the Devils, but he's obviously been very impressive, hence the contract. If he continues to impress and develop like he has since getting drafted we'll probably be seeing him in New Jersey in a year or two.

Right now it obviously looks like a steal of a draft pick, but it's way too early to tell...

Urbom has apparently looked great in camp and has the skillset to be an NHL player in the near future. He'll definitely be in the WHL this year, but I think the AHL and some time with the big club next season is almost guaranteed.

I wasn't really that pleased with this pick at the time, but I feel fantastic about it now.

Update: Urbom will be in the lineup for the Devils in their preseason game against the Rangers tomorrow night.

It's still an extreme longshot that he actually makes the NHL roster. Nonetheless, keep an eye on him. Apparently his mental game is exceptional.

nice, i would be happy to see him in the NHL, but i'd rather he be completely ready so a season in the WHL is probably coming

Non-devils fan: Saw him in camp - I saw a lot of potential...still a little raw, but you can definitely see his head is in the right place...still a couple years off but the safe money (well, I guess as close as it can get in a case like this) is on him being a regular NHLer...I liked what I saw...

Alright noob question here but if a kid signs a contract and is posted to juniors does he get any sort of cash money from the big club or is it since him playing in juniors means he does not burn a year on his contract means he gets nothing????

He gets his signing bonus and I don't think the contract kicks in untill he turns pro.
