As for Marian Gaborik, "He won't play against Detroit, we'll make a decision come the Boston game."
Tortorella admitted he's straddling a fine line as he gets to know his most important skater between allowing him time to heal his sore groin and pushing him a bit to skate.
"With Gabby, it's a matter of him mentally feeling comfortable with it," Tortorella said. "It's goodd to see him scrimmage today, you can see the talent level there. It's just like knee injuries, a lot of it is just getting through it mentally. Hopefully we'll be smart about this and get him geared up for that opener. He will play some exhibition games, it's just when he plays them.
"I don't blame him for the way he thinks about this," Tortorella added. "I believe in pushing athletes. But you can't be stupid either."
Tortorella said right now is not crunch time so there's still time to show plenty of patience with Gaborik.
And thank you for the great GDTs and uploading that Gilroy goal.
Also, Zetterberg will not be playing tonight.
Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg sore groin flared up in the morning, forcing him to sit out tonight's preseason game against the New York Rangers at Joe Louis Arena.
Justin Abdelkader will take Zetterberg's spot on the line with Dan Cleary and Todd Bertuzzi. Cory Emmerton will replace Abdelkader on the line with Kirk Maltby and Johan Ryno and coach Mike Babcock said Evan McGrath will be inserted into the lineup. He would center the line with Mattias Ritola and Jan Mursak. The Ville Leino-Valtteri Filppula-Jason Williams line stays intact.
Do Wings fans flip out with Zetterberg's sore groin like Rangers fans do with Gaborik?
I'm sure if Gaborik had a Conn Smythe and a Cup under his belt for this team it would be a different story. Anyway, missing Zetterberg for a while probably will not hurt Detroit all that much, whereas if we're missing Gaborik for any extended amount of time... well you know
Some general info on who will be in the lineup tonight for the Rangers. From Zipay:
Nine players----who likely won't be in the lineup tonight in Detroit---skated hard with all four Rangers coaches (yes, Schoenfeld included): Gaborik, Prospal, Kotalik, Staal, Del Zotto, Gilroy, Sanguinetti Valiquette and Johnson.
All 29 players will be on the flight this afternoon, I'm told.
So, it appears that Henrik Lundqvist and Matt Zaba will share duties in net tonight, and the defense will be Redden, Rozsival, Girardi, Heikkinen, Semenov, Potter.
So yeah, I'm lazy and won't bother figuring out the lines from there
Ouch the D for tonight looks a little suspect, glad I finally get to watch a game though. Would be nice to see Sangs, Staal instead of Semenov, Potter. But oh well they all need to get time. Hoping Heikkinen does well.
