I don't understand the concern about losing a guy like tlusty or stalberg. Kessel is a future 40 goal scorer and already a much better player. Losing one young player like that and a pick or two is a great deal.

2 1sts will be a tough pill to swallow, but then again we are getting a 21 year old 40+ goal scorer in Phil Kessel

This trade probably has more pieces to it than we think.

National Post: Leafs close to making deal for Kessel

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/b...or-kessel.aspx

Quote:
The Toronto Maple Leafs are close to acquiring forward Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins, a source familiar with the negotiations has told the Postís Bruce Arthur.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to deal two first-round picks and a second-rounder for the 21-year-old restricted free agent, who has been unable to come to terms with the Bruins.

Kessel, the fifth overall pick of the Bruins in the 2006 NHL draft, tallied 66 goals and 60 assists in 222 games in his three-year career.

His 36 goals last season were the most by a Bruin since the 2002-03 season and he set career-highs in all categories, finishing with 60 points.

Kessel also had the longest point streak in the league last year, collecting a point in 18 straight games from Nov. 13- Dec. 21.

He expects to return to action in November, after a slow recovery from shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in May.

Something has to be announced before the game, right? Right?!

Burke can't just sit up on his perch the whole game as we watch in agony. He won't do that. Please don't do that.

I'm torn. I like Kessel, but damn we paid a steep price. Especially when from my perspective, Boston wasn't really sitting in a position of power. I just can't shake the feeling that this one is going to come back and bite us in the ass. Which I suppose is the norm for TO.

capgeek has you guys right up to it (300k over), but i don't know if that's correct or close to the actual lineup. SO that's why I'm wondering if a player has to go back cause Boston's cap situation is dicey as well

Hmm, I don't know, but remember Kessel isn't signed yet, so his salary won't count until the Leafs sign him to a contract.

We haven't paid any price just yet. We don't even know what the deal is or if there is even going to be one.

Good news (from my point of view) is Stallberg is at the game. So, that's one prospect off the list, and hoping Bozaks off the list for the mere fact that he was a highly touted and chased FA signing. So at least two prospects should not be that potential "other player" involved...
