can somebody tell me about that neilson dude? and why is everybody writing his name differently? I've seen so far Neilson, Neilsson and Neilsen.

I couldn't find his name anywhere on hockeys future on habs prospects list, was he ever drafted? how old is he?

Neilson is the correct spelling I believe.

Drafted by the LA Kings in the 5th round of 2004

It's Neilson but people seem to have trouble with it...

AFAIK he was a free agent signing this year by ol Bob. Picked up to be a tough guy and solid player for Hamilton. He's had a short career in the AHL and especially known for fighting and putting up big PIMs last year but seems like he will be a solid AHL player. He will almost certainly play in Hamilton this year and hopefully be a leader, enforcer and protector down there!

Edited my post because I was a bit wrong, I figured he had played more time in the AHL but I guess he is a relative newcomer!

Just came back from the game. A few thoughts.

- Gionta comes as advertised. The man is an absolute pinball. He was everywhere and his presence was felt at each shift. Everything was there. Forecheck, speed, defensive awareness, offensive awareness, puck handling, positioning you name it. You'd NEVER think he was 5'7. The money Bob spent came with a guarantee.

- Patches had a rough beginning but settled down and found his groove.

- Pleks had a good game. Can easily man the 2nd line. Created chances, used his linemates, still a little rusty but he'll shake it off.

- This is a capable 2nd line. I'm more than confident going into the season with theses 3.

- Ben Maxwell showed a ton of skill. I was impressed. Very soft hands, should crack the line up a year from now.

- Chipchura's in trouble because Metro is too effective. He does all the little things right. Dependable and steady, I don't see how Chipchura overtakes him. The man's too solid to be benched.

- Eric Nielson. Wow. Played like his hair was on fire. Would have loved if he channeled that energy more into the game than simply fighting. When he was playing, he was effective.

- I honestly thought we would get DESTROYED. Great team effort lead by superb coaching. This season looks very promising.

Did that last haymaker connect? Or did Neilson just catch him with an "arm bar" which caused Yablonski to go down?

It missed from my view but he had enough momentum and clipped him a bit to take him down. The fist didn't connect though. If it would have... ouch.

Haha, not sure really. Looks like the momentum took him down more then anything. Found another of Henry:

Thanks you two, I've watched the YT clip that CPrice provided. I wasn't sure if he fully connected on that last shot. Or if his momentum was the reason that Yablonski went down.

Eric Neilson used to be Sidney Crosby's bodyguard in their Rimouski days.

He's not a heavyweight, but you almost want to buy out Laraque, take the cap hit and sign this guy to a minimum deal after tonight.

He started off pretty well, he just seemed to run out of gas towards the end of the fight.

Almost, but then we snap back into reality and realize that it is only one game.

Great recap!

Erm, nope. Neilson and Chipchura have certainly not earned their spots. Unless Chippy is outstanding Metro is going to (deservedly) have the fourth line center position.

I love it, save for
4th line which would be
Stewart-Metro-Neilson

I mean, it sounds ignorant, but a guy like Neilson, does he actually need to be on a specific side? He's not there to score...

Nielson's was Crosby's best pal, bodyguard and roommate in Rimouski.

Tough player, good guy, will neeeeeeeever make the league.

Maybe it's just my adherence to the 'never say never' philosophy but I find that very harsh. It seems like he has been improving at least from a look at his statistical history. Increased time and effectiveness with Peoria over two years. Should be playing near every game in Hamilton I would guess this year. He just needs to get a little better at the game itself and he can do that. He could be an effective goon-ish pest type player on a fourth line somewhere if he improves a bit. Saying he'll never make the league is way to harsh to me, but I just don't like to discount people.

He'll never be a scorer or make top 6 duty. That's a 'never' I would say with confidence, but I think fourth line duty is not such an unfathomable goal.

No, it did not connect. Also, Yablonski got cut when he fell face first on the ice with Neilson over him. I don't understand all the hype surrounding him. I don't think he'll be an NHLer.

And I was impressed with how Gionta was working hard on the ice tonight. I wasn't surprised, but it was good to see. I could see him being named captain after all. He's like Koivu a few years ago, expect as a winger.

But the one I was the most happy with is Plekanec. He was really working hard. I know he's always working, but tonight, he did all the second efforts he could. He went to the net, he dived to get the puck, he worked well on the PK...and he was shooting the puck a lot. Maybe even too much! But that's not a bad thing at this point. I think he'll bounce back!

Maxwell skill set is also awesome. I don't know if you guys noticed, but at some point at the end of the game, he was just inside the Sens territory and he turned around and did a little pass to the defenseman. It was a beauty!

Anyways, all in all, boring game because there wasn't much good player on the ice, but it was still great to see some hockey again!

Boucher coached Neilson in Rimouski, so he prolly had a say in his signing

Watching the game on RDS Gionta really doesn't look like he is 5'7".
